Good luck.

What Makes a Middle-Grade Novel Timeless?

How can books I loved as a child remain popular, when society changes so quickly? Nobody had cell phones or internet when I was in elementary school. So how can books written at that time still appeal to today’s kids? I believe the books that stand the test of time have unique characters readers can relate to, cheer for, and fall in love with, combined with situations that kids still have…like annoying siblings, school issues, fights with friends, and trying to see where you fit in our world.

I blogged about this on the Mixed-Up Files...of Middle-Grade Authors site today. http://www.fromthemixedupfiles.com/2010/06/what-makes-a-middle-grade-novel-timeless-2/ (http://www.fromthemixedupfiles.com/2010/06/what-makes-a-middle-grade-novel-timeless-2/)

Hop on over and see which book I believe will become timeless, and find out what amazing authors like Lauren Myracle, Wendy Mass, Bruce Hale, Laurie Friedman, and Lisa Yee think about timeless middle-grade books.  I'd love to know why you think some middle-grade books remain popular for over thirty years, and which current books you believe will become timeless.

Don't forget to check out our second summer giveaway, where one lucky reader will win these three fabulous middle-grade books:

The Reinvention of Edison Thomas by Jacqueline Houtman (ARC)
Mallory Goes Green by Laurie Friedman (hardcover)
A Dog's Way Home by Bobbie Pyron (ARC)

Today on the Mixed-Up Files...Audiobooks: Great sounding middle-grade books

http://www.fromthemixedupfiles.com/2010/06/audiobooks-great-sounding-middle-grade-books/

I  :love audiobooks and listen to several each month during my daily walks. It's a great way for me to multi-task and keep up with my 'reading'. My kids really love them too and I've seen the benefit of using audiobooks to augment/complement their daily reading.

I've listed some of my all time faves as well as recs from our Mixed-Up authors. Please pop by and share some of your favorites as well!

The Care and Feeding of Young Library Patrons

While libraries across the countries are facing budget cuts, they are still in the business of buying books.  Find out what makes one librarian, who makes all the purchasing decisions for children's books for Virginia's largest library system, buy a book.

I haven't listened to an audio book yet but I intend to do so soon.

Audio books are great for car trips, use them all the time.  Although I am running into the problem of having a 1997 vehicle with only a tape player and the majority of new books are on cds. oy

I credit audio books as being one of the reasons my son has become such an avid reader. From the time he was born, we listened to the Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl and His Dark Materials books on long car rides. He listened and paid attention to a story for hours at a time, so when he learned to read, long stories didn't phase him. He is in middle school now and his appetite for reading continues to grow. Now I'm getting sneaky and slipping in audios of books he wouldn't pick on his own.

Thanks! Yes, he is quite the reader. He loved the first Harry Potter, but the second one scared him so bad with a particularly sinister scene at the end. That's what got me thinking so much about the different levels of middle grade.

Today we unveiled our For Kids page, which is full of book-related crafts, word games and activities, homework help, and writing tips for kids just getting started.  We also have some original word puzzles you can't find anywhere else, created exclusively for our kid readers.

We plan on adding new original puzzles and crafts each month, so spread the word to all the kids you know.  And tell them to stop by and help us name the For Kids page mascot, our furry creature friend who is also prominently displayed on our OhMG! Middle-grade News sidebar.

I just posted an interview with Ruth McNally Barshaw, the amazing author and illustrator of the Ellie McDoodle series.  Ruth is going to stop by the Mixed-Up site soon to answer questions...and there are TWO giveaways--leave a comment on the blog post and a random generator will select two winners on Thursday, February 24th.  The winners will receive a personalized Ellie book of their choice and Ruth is going to add some surprise sketches inside each book!

And Ruth shared several rough sketches from Ellie McDoodle: Most Valuable Player, which will be released in Spring, 2012.

Check out the interview I just posted of Ruth McNally Barshaw, the amazing author/illustrator of the Ellie McDoodle series.  She shared an awesome writing and illustrating exercise that I can't wait to try, and wait until you see her giveaway!

Two lucky people who comment on the Mixed-Up Files site will not only win an autographed and personalized paperback of her newly reissued Ellie McDoodle: Have Pen, Will Travel book, but Ruth will also draw a sketch of each winner!

Most of our contests are only for people who live in the US and Canada, but anyone can enter this giveaway!  If winners live outside the US or Canada, they’ll still receive the sketch.  Instead of the autographed book, Ruth will give them a peek at a few digital pages from the next Ellie book, Ellie McDoodle: Most Valuable Player, a work in progress that will be published in Spring, 2012.

:thankyou I'm glad you've been enjoying our posts!

I shared a bunch of revision tips on the Mixed-Up Files blog. Years ago, I used to spend so much time trying to make my prose sing when revising a first draft, but so much of those areas disappeared or changed during future revision rounds, I've changed my strategy so much since then. I'd love to know how you attack revisions.

I absolutely love using Joyce Sweeney's Plot Clock...both before I begin a draft, and after revising to see if the plot is strong enough. I linked to my notes about a Plot Clock workshop I had taken a while back--and also shared how to watch Joyce's amazing hour and a half Plot Clock webinar for free!

With all the awesome middle grade novels published, how can you decide what to read next? Check out my post on the Mixed-Up Files site for some ideas including links to unique book lists by topics such as humorous, fantasy, books for reluctant readers, multicultural, action and adventure, books for strong readers, contemporary, sports, historical fiction, etc. http://www.fromthemixedupfiles.com/2016/02/find-great-middle-grade-novels/

In my post, there's a link to all the New Release posts. Those always help me find wonderful new books to read.

I gave a special shout out to the SCBWI Blueboards! There was a thread a while ago about the 10 best MGs, and I linked to the middle grade section, too. I couldn't include the recent picture book thread about books that involve the act of trying to write or read in my blog post, but I'm absolutely loving the responses and have built up a huge must-read library list. I LOVE the Blueboard!

Are you a plotter or a pantser? I used to be a total pantser when I wrote my first few novels, but soon realized how much work it took to totally overhaul each of them so they had strong enough plot arcs. I'm a bit outline-phobic, and worked hard to find other techniques I could use before writing future novels so my first drafts would be much stronger.

Check out my post on the Mixed-Up Files site with lots of helpful tips I picked up from experts like Joyce Sweeney, Lorin Oberweger, and agent Jill Corcoran. http://www.fromthemixedupfiles.com/2016/04/plotter-pantser/

Also, if you have an upcoming MG from a PAL publisher, let us know and we'll make sure we include it in a New Release post. They go up the first Monday, Wednesday, or Friday of each month, so the month before yours is published would be perfect timing. We love helping readers, teachers, media specialists, etc. find great new middle great novels.

Hop over to the Mixed-Up Files to celebrate the launch day for Debbie Reed Fischer's amazing new middle grade novel, THIS IS NOT THE ABBY SHOW! I absolutely love this book and was so excited to see Booklist compare it to DIARY OF A WIMPY KID and DORK DIARIES. Not only did I laugh my way through it, but I also understand ADHD so much better now.

You'll have the chance to win a signed copy of THIS IS NOT THE ABBY SHOW (if a teacher or librarian wins, they'll also receive up to 30 bookmarks). You could also win a critique of up to 10 pages of an MG or YA.

Today on the Mixed-Up Files blog, I posted about awesome revision workbooks and tips. I'm always looking for new tools to help me dig deeper and strengthen my manuscripts.

I came up with the idea for this post because my local SCBWI recently invited me to take an online workshop using WRITING THE BREAKOUT NOVEL WORKBOOK by Donald Maass. I instantly fell in love with the workbook. It helped me flesh out my characters more and highlight their heroic traits so readers can relate to even the nastiest characters. I also learned how to strengthen all my characters, plot, sub plots, theme, etc. I included info about several other amazing workbooks and couldn't resist linking to my favorite plotting tool--The Plot Clock by super-mentor and author Joyce Sweeney.

Happy revising! http://www.fromthemixedupfiles.com/2016/10/revision-workbooks-helpful-tools/

I asked a bunch of amazing authors who have both middle grade and young adult novels published how they know if their books should be MG or YA, besides the age of their main characters. Their responses definitely made the line between older MG and younger YA a bit less blurry.

Want to write the first draft of a novel quickly? Check out my fast drafting and #NaNoWriMo tips on the Mixed-Up Files blog. http://www.fromthemixedupfiles.com/2017/10/fast-drafting/

Here's one of my favorite tips to make it easier to dive back into your manuscript: Write notes for yourself every time you leave your computer—some exciting things that should happen soon, and an idea of where to start when you come back. You can even type the first sentence or two in the next chapter (although you might get sucked in and finish writing it before you leave).
