Title: purchasing original artwork
Post by: ohverbena on August 20, 2010, 09:50 AM
Hi all,
First time poster here. I'm a picture book author who is interested in purchasing the cover of the original artwork of one of my books. Neither one of us has done this before, and we want to be fair to each other. I also was the book's project manager, so I worked directly with the illustrator and bent over backward to stretch her deadline when some stuff came up in her life, causing me and everyone else lot of stress. Do you have any advice for figuring out reasonable price?

Thanks,
Kristen

It depends on what rights you are purchasing. If you are only buying the artwork to hang on your wall, that's one price. But if you are buying the artwork and all rights to it(meaning you own the copyright to it and can reproduce and sell it as much as you like), that's a completely different thing. Which are you doing?
