Title: Help finding period books California 1890's
Post by: PJV on September 25, 2011, 01:44 PM
I'm looking for books (or diaries) written during the 1890's or about the time period. Prefer fiction, but if anyone knows some about the cultural history, that would be great. I'm particularly interested in the San Francisco/wine country area, but at this point in my research, I'm trying anything in CA. My book is about a girl who goes back in time to this era and lands with an upper class/wealthy white family. I've found a few books free on B&N written during this time, but they were Eastern or Southern locals and honestly, I was kind of shocked at how the language was so similar to now. Even the few diary entries I found sounded like they could have been written recently. Though my main concern is the language and wanting characters to sound appropriate, I'd also love to infuse some cultural references that sound genuine (not just mentioning people). Fortunately, I don't have to worry about my MC since she's from the present, but I want to give her something to think about!

 :thankyou  :flower  :grin2:

The Diary of Lucy Whipple by Karen Cushman is 1890's (I think) and set in California during the gold rush. She lives in a mining community, but moves from Boston and is well educated.

Also, just got Letters from the Corrugated Castle: A novel of Gold Rush California 1850-1852 by  Joan Blos but haven't read it yet. :)
