Title: Carus Publishing Pay Scale
Post by: eecoburn on January 11, 2012, 02:24 PM
Does Carus Publishing post it's pay scale for magazine pieces like Highlights does? I am trying to determine if it is worth submitting a story to them, on the chance that they might accept it, vs. holding on to the story for a work-for-hire publisher who expressed mild interest.  It's a bird in the hand kind of a problem...

Thanks for your help!

In the 2012 Children's Writer's and Illustrator's Market, it states that they pay up to $.25/word. But they don't pay until the story is published, which can be years after acceptance. And it can take many months after submission before you find out if they want it. That said -- Carus is a wonderful company that really gave me a start in the children's literary world. All of their magazines are well done and respected. If your work is published by them, it's a good thing to mention when sending queries or cover letters.  Good luck!
