Sure, they take all rights when you sell them a story, but they have granted permission to reprint my story twice and in both instances have sent me a check. I received the following letter today:
Highlights for Children has granted permission to reprint your material as follows:
Story Title "My Sister Snores"
Permission Granted to N. Carolina Dept. of Public Instruction
As a courtesy, you will be receiving, or may already have received, a check from us.
I love unexpected surprises!

Congratulations! They did that with two of mine. The first story made more money from reprints than it did for the original sale. :ceilingdance

Very classy! Congrats!

I've made about five times more from Highlights reselling than the original payment.
I love 'em, too!
-
Congratulations! I remember your wonderful story!

Congrats!
That's one of the many reasons I love them too !
-
Congratulations! What a fun surprise!
:yay
Highlights is the best. I love working with them too.

What an unexpected, pleasant surprise! :getmail
It must be an intriguing story if they're reprinting it. Congratulations!
-
Yay for you! Enjoy the unexpected income. :)

This is interesting. I've seen a Highlights story of mine around on the internet. It appears to have been used in a number of university programs for reading teachers, yet I never heard anything from Highlights. The story was published over ten years ago. All correspondence with them was done by snail mail, and I've moved since then. Do you think it's been to long to contact them??

Oh, ShannonH, that is too cool. Highlights is such a class act. This is one of many reasons to love them.....

Hello--I'm new here and glad to meet other Highlights fans. I attended a workshop in Boyds Mills in March, and touring the office in Honesdale was a thrill! The workshop (on writing for magazines) was wonderful, and truly "Fun With a Purpose!"
-
Bar, you should definitely contact Highlights and let them know about your story. They said one of the chief reasons they bought all rights was precisely because the author moved and they would've liked to reprint or resell it, but would get held up because they couldn't contact the author.
Shannon, so nice to get free money! Highlights is a class act.

I received an unexpected note in the mail today from Highlights. They sold my Snow Day in Space reprint rights to Peoples Education.
Definitely the gift that keeps on giving and so nice of them since they do own all rights and do not have to send a writer anything.
But the best thing is to know that my story will be read again by students somewhere.
