I'd love to tap the collective wisdom of this list. I'm looking for some picture books that feature a rivalry between two characters. It does not have to be sibling rivalry, although that would work. A couple of books I've found so far are
Pirate vs. Pirate by Mary Quattlebaum
The Tale of Pip and Squeak by Kate Duke
Thanks for any leads that are similar to these.

Hmmmm...three that come to mind off the top of my head are Don't Need Friends by Carolyn Crimi, The Remarkable Friendship of Mr. Cat and Mr. Rat by Rick Walton, and Earth to Clunk by Pam Smallcomb.
(^Although these may be, in part, more in the "clash" than "competition" category.)

Rosie Sprout's Time to Shine is a new one authored by Knopf editor Alison Wortche (I might be butchering that spelling -- Kurtis?).

SHARK VS. TRAIN!

"Dirty Joe, The Pirate": Sibling rivalry between brother and sister pirate.

I'm not sure if this strictly fits your requirement--it's not really a versus situation--but I think ENEMY PIE by Derek Munson/Tara Callahan King is wonderful. It's about a young kid whose dad invites his school enemy over to play.

You may want to take a look at YOU'RE MEAN, LILY JEAN! by Frieda Wishinsky.

Thanks, these are great recommendations!
Diana, Dirty Joe sounds hilarious! I'm looking forward to reading that one.

Sorry, I'm just seeing this now. You spelled it right, and I love Allison's book -- what makes it wonderful for me is how the hero Rosie rises above the rivalry. She sort of "defeats" her rival but it's through kindness and not done out of rivalry, she just does what she loves to do. Great story.

TWO OF A KIND by Jacqui Robbins. It's about rivalry between girls at school, with a hint of mean girls. It's wonderfully written and illustrated.
