Title: Writing for Children’s Magazines Ezine
Post by: Ev on April 01, 2012, 08:37 AM
Today is the launch of a new ezine—Writing for Children's Magazines.

Hopefully it’ll be a helpful resource for all of you who write for this genre.  Please check it out and give me your feedback and suggestions.  http://evelynchristensen.com/mags.html (http://evelynchristensen.com/mags.html)

With the closing of Jan Fields’ wonderful Kid Magazine Writers site, I thought there was a need for such a resource on the internet, so that was the impetus for this new adventure for me.

Best wishes,
Ev

Thank you for the encouragement and positive responses from all of you.

I’m starting out with a fairly simple publication, because I want to be sure I can do a good job with it. Perhaps with contributions from writers like you it will grow in the future.   :)

Thank you for the feedback.  I'm glad you like the layout.  There were times when I was very frustrated, because pages don't look the same on Firefox and Internet Explorer.  So I was having to make decisions about overall appearance, even if certain choices weren't optimal for one or the other.

Just wanted to thank you for all the work you've put into this and your entire website in general. So glad to hear all this excitement! And thank you, Amy, for letting me know how the site looks on Safari.

Just a reminder: I would love to receive subs from some of you. And in case you're worried, with the Sample Issue Overview, that you can't include the kind editor tips that Tina did such a great job of providing, that's not required.  All of us obviously appreciate those kinds of tips, and if I'm choosing between two subs, one of which has the extra tips and one of which doesn't, then I'm probably going to choose the one that does.  But I'll let you in on a secret--right now I haven't received any Sample Issue Overview subs.  So your chances of acceptance are pretty high.

Ev -
Thank you for providing such a wonderful resource for Children's Magazine Writers.  :)  It is wonderful to have all that information in one place and not have to run around the internet all crazy-like. (Which I frequently do!)  If I think of anything sub-worthy I will send it your way.  In the mean time:  :thankyou

I appreciate the encouragement and kind words.

CestMoi, I'm sorry but back issues aren't available.  The sample issue overview remains a part of the site indefinitely (see Clubhouse Jr for the April one), but I ask authors for only 1-month rights to their articles, so when the month is up, they're gone.

The August issue of W4CM is now up.  Included in it is a wonderful overview of Pockets magazine by Amy Cobb--our very own Writermutt from here on the Blue Board :thankyou .

Melissa Abramovitz also has a great article about focusing our topics. Melissa recently had a book published on writing for children's magazines, so you might want to check that out if you haven't already seen it.

December issue is posted.  Includes an interview with the editor of the award-winning magazine, Skipping Stones, and a helpful article by Cheryl Reifsnyder on asking good interview questions.

I'm also including a brand new section on the ezine that lists markets that are receptive to young authors and illustrators.  So if you know of any kids who are wanting to see their work published, they might want to check it out.

[Took me about 2 hours to get the Tidbits page posted. Kept getting an error message for it. Finally figured out that apparently my website server, which hosts my site for free, doesn't allow the word 'PayPal' on any of my pages. Who knew? My son said that if I wanted to pay for a premium site, I'd be allowed money-making words like 'Amazon' and 'PayPal.' I think I'll gladly forgo the use of such words for my free site. ;) ]

I just posted the first issue of W4CM in this brand new year!  It includes a fun piece by Marty Crisp.  For those of you who like to write for the Christian market, there's an interview with the founder of The Kids' Ark; she gives lots of helpful details about their publication and what they're looking for.  The Tidbits page has oodles of information.

http://evelynchristensen.com/mags.html (http://evelynchristensen.com/mags.html)

Allison, I apologize that I didn't see your question until just a couple of days ago.  Thank you for your interest.  I think you can click on 'Notify' at the bottom of this thread and get an email notice of updates. I've also included another possibility at the bottom of the Tidbits page for this month.

Stacey, thank you for your post and please tell your daughter I'm wishing her the best in her writing endeavors.

To all of you, I'm still eager to have articles for the ezine. Please query me or send me a finished manuscript.  I consider reprints, if you've retained the rights.

Another good issue, Ev. Marty Crisp's list is relevant for all who write for kids, not just for magazines.

Like Allison I too wanted to get notifications. At least on my computer there is no "Notify" button anywhere on any of the E-zine pages. I looked everywhere and even had eagle-eye-DD look...  :eyeballs: Not on the Tidbits page either. I have standard IE as my browser.

No, the Notify button is here on the Blueboard page.  Allison had said, "Is it possible to subscribe to your ezine or at least to the update thread here?"

If you want to get notifications other than here on the Blueboard, there's an explanation how you can do that at the bottom of the Tidbits page on the ezine.

I appreciate your comment, Bobi.

Audrey, I don't know which thing you're looking for.  If you're looking for the Notify button here on this Blueboard page, at least on my screen it's at the bottom in the same row with the Reply button.  There's REPLY, ADD BOOKMARK, ADD POLL, and then NOTIFY.

If you're looking on the ezine, on the homepage, click on "Ev's January Market Tidbits."  At the bottom of that page, under "Reminder" there's a link you can go to that will notify you when any changes are made on whatever page you give a URL for.  I use the resource for monitoring lots of websites I want to keep up with.

Hope this helps.

You can try going to your profile, select modify profile, and then click on notifications. There, you can turn on notifications. However, the notify function does not always work.

I don't think the poll function is enabled for new users.

Thank you, Onestepp.

To all--I keep getting requests from readers wanting to know how they can be notified of new issues of the ezine, so I've finally set up a Yahoo group. I'll send an email via that listserv and if you're in the group, you'll get the email. I might occasionally send out other updates via that group between ezine issues.

Here's where to sign up for the Yahoo group if you're interested--

Ev - Thanks so much for this wonderful resource! I love how you also include magazine markets that accept work by children and teens. My teenage son loves to write and had poetry published in Magic Dragon and Creative Kids magazines when he was younger. It was great to see those mags listed in your ezine and we are always on the lookout for more mag publishers that accept work written by teens. Your ezine is a wealth of wonderful information for all of us! ::-)

Sara - Thank you for your informative piece on submitting crafts to magazines!  You really got me thinking of some craft ideas to submit.  ::-)

I hope this question makes sense, but have you considered a mobile app? Or would the site work correctly with smart phone?
Title: Re: Writing for Children’s Magazines Ezine
Post by: Ev on May 25, 2015, 09:00 AM
Thank you, Sarah, for your suggestion. I always welcome new ideas and comments for improvement.

Unfortunately, I know nothing about developing a mobile app. My current website is totally free to me, with my only expense being the purchase of my domain name each year. My wonderful son Stephen (who currently works as a computer programmer at Google) helped me set up the website about ten years ago. He taught me a little html, and except for an occasional question to him, I've maintained the website by myself all these years.

I doubt that the free package I have with Atspace.com, my website host, allows mobile apps. But if you know about developing mobile apps and want to share with me information about how that's done, and if Atspace.com allows it, I would certainly be willing to consider it.

Also, if you know how to reformat my website so it's usable on a smart phone, I would be happy to have you share that information with me.
Title: Re: Writing for Children’s Magazines Ezine
Post by: SarahW on May 25, 2015, 03:49 PM
I don't at the moment, but I am wanting to learn HTML.^^

Also I've noted there seems to not be allot of middle grade litmags. I wonder if literary fiction is really that rare, or if someone just hasn't created the zine yet.

I approach "sensitive" real world issues without glorification or vilification with just a touch of fantasy. Though I've grown to hate the term "sensitive issue", as all to often it seems to be interpreted as dark and gritty.:/
Title: Re: Writing for Children’s Magazines Ezine
Post by: Ev on May 25, 2015, 04:34 PM
You could always try creating the zine yourself, Sarah.  :yup

If there's a hole in the market, it obviously is just waiting to be filled by some enterprising, insightful, creative person.

I'll even publicize your zine in W4CM and do an editor interview of you, if you'd like. I always love new publications.
Title: Re: Writing for Children’s Magazines Ezine
Post by: SarahW on May 30, 2015, 04:47 PM
I'd be willing to create a zine, though I suspect it would be eBook only and possibly ultra niche.

Actually I'd like to do one for "quiet" middle grade SF that's closer to magic realism. I'd like to see and read more work like the novella I wrote written by other people. Cause surely I'm not the only one that writes that.:/

I found of interest this tip from the editor of the Christian magazine:
Speaking from experience, here's one approach: take 1200 words as your upper limit, and hack the story down until it's nearly unrecognizable. Wait a week, then trim it to 700. If the story survives, it'll be excellent.

I sincerely apologize. :embarassed

In the last issue, I thought The Caterpillar was a paying market. It's been brought to my attention that that was incorrect.

I hope I haven't messed anybody up with my mistake.

I'm sorry for the bad information.

Great issue, Evelyn!

I'm hoping you might be able to clarify something for me -- One of the tidbits says that High Five is closing to submissions on February 15th and submissions currently in process will be decided upon during that time.

Does that mean that the Submittable status needs to be "in progress" by the 15th or the submission will be automatically declined?

I ask because I submitted a poem on 1/30, and I don't know how long it takes for the status to change from "received" to "in progress."

Thank you for the feedback!  :flowers2

Kelsey, I'm sorry that I don't know the answer to your question. I would think it would mean you just have to have submitted before February 15th, but since the "in progress" terminology used in their website announcement is part of the Submittable sequence, you could be right.

Does anybody else know the answer to Kelsey's question?

I don't know, but I agree with Ev. I believe I've had something go from "received" to "accepted" without going to "in progress" in Submittable, so I don't know if you can always depend on those status labels. If it's been received, I would think it would be considered.

And thanks for the great issue, Ev. A good reminder about titles, and as a grammar freak, I like the tutorial about "me" and "I". :)

Oh, Ev, I'm sorry to hear that you're discontinuing the ezine! I've always enjoyed reading it. (I've also meant to send you more submissions than I did, but sadly, life has been too busy the last couple of years for magazine writing.)

THANK YOU for providing such a wonderful, useful resource these last 6+ years and for championing a cause dear to my heart.  :yourock

Best wishes on your next writing venture!
