Title: Need a current word for "jerk"
Post by: Betsy on April 09, 2012, 02:52 PM
Hi,

I'm not sure what a current word for jerk, meanie, or bad person would be.

I also need one for dweeb or idiot.

Any ideas?

It can be for older kids or adults.  Just nothing x-rated.  I'm sure there's one that I'm just not thinking of.  All suggestions appreciated. Thank you!!

For older kids or adults, the examples I can think of are probably more suited for the Teen board ...  :grin

"[word censored]" or "douchebag" is used a lot.  I don't consider that X-rated, but some might.  It's acceptable in YA if tonally skewing in that direction.

Younger kids -- I think "idiot" is being used, to some degree.  To me, "dweeb" and "idiot" mean two different things.  Dweeb is more like nerd or dork...

I still hear jerk and idiot used. Others, as Amanda noted, might not be printable...

I agree that jerk and idiot are still current. Sweet, timeless words.  :grin

I agree with Amanda, that most of the examples that come to mind seem a bit edgy. For jerk, I also thought of [word censored]; the colloquial word for one's posterior  :mooning; SOB; or shmuck. (Hope these don't go too far this board!)

For idiot, what about bozo?

D-bag was the first one that came to my mind (for teens and adults.) It's definitely controversial, though.

Here's one link regarding a federal ruling that included the term: http://studentactivism.net/2009/05/15/sotomayors-anti-student-douchebag-ruling/

My (upper elementary) students, to my chagrin, use "jerk," "idiot," "stupid." I haven't heard any of them use the word "dweeb." They'd probably say "nerd."

CREEP for a strong baddy, and LOSER for a weaker one. Directly from my teens to your thread.

Tool bag, or more simply - tool.

Thanks, guys.  I always think I'm way behind the teen times, but your answers show me things haven't changed as much as I thought.

I'm with Mirka on creep (or creeper) and loser - I hear those from kids a lot...

Around here, "doofus" or "doof" is used a good bit.

Um, I am suddenly hearing a**hat among the older teen set.

But I agree that jerk is current. Also tool and d-bag.

In my house, it's always plain "butt". I hate it, but my 7th grader uses it ALL the time. (I suppose the main reason I hate it is because it's primarily used to insult her younger sisters.)
