Nope. I keep checking the website, but no announcement. Do you think, as entrants, they'll send us a letter or email saying the decision has been made? (assuming we don't win, of course!  :laugh)

Congratulations, Michelle! It must be a testament to your amazingness as a mother and dedication as a writer that you're able to check the boards the day after giving birth! :) Girl or boy?

And I can't find the winners, either...

Ok, case of mommy brain. I googled it, too, and assumed 2011 meant stories pubbed in 2011. Sorry for the false alarm!

Thanks, Sara! We had a little girl. I'm not sure what it says about me that I'm on the boards already--but we can call it dedication ;)

Okay, to keep myself from sending a pestering email to SCBWI about when the results will be announced, I did a little web detective work. :) Last year's results were posted on May 5, and the year before on May 24.

Not that that tells us when they'll post *this* year, but hopefully, it will be soon!
Title: Re: SCBWI Magazine Merit Awards

Doesn't it say something about winners in April in the rules? I'm thinking that means the winners may have already been notified.

Thanks, Ev! And congrats to you on the new grandbaby!
Title: Re: SCBWI Magazine Merit Awards

It says

Award recipients will be announced the following April.

So I guess they're off schedule, if "announced" means posted. But I'll bet you're right and the winners have been notified already.

I was thrilled to find out that I won the award for Poetry for "Hippity Zippity" published in Highlights High Five. This was the first year I had entered the contest, so just like the bunnies in Hippity Zippity, I was hippity hippity hopping and zippity, zippity, zopping all day! Congratulations to all the winners.

Congrats, Everyone!

Also, a quick question: The entry guidelines asks for x copies of the published work. Does that have to be actual copies of the magazines? Or can it be photocopies of the piece?  Thanks!

Awfulwaffles: I can tell you that a crit partner of mine received a letter of merit last year for a poem that appeared in an online magazine. So I think it's possible. But check the rules in case anything has changed.

Diana--that's encouraging to know. I had the same question, and SCBWI doesn't provide an email address for questions, just the mailing address. The instructions say that every magazine story is eligible, which sounds like online mags should be included.

AwfulWaffles (Deb), what did you decide?

Thanks, everyone! I wonder who won for fiction and illustration. Any blueboarders?

Carrie and Jody, the first place poem was "Sandy Surprise" which was published in Clubhouse Jr. (August 2012) and the second place poem was "Unwelcome to Opposite Island" which was published in Highlights (July 2012). Certainly been a lucky year! I feel very fortunate.

I just found out that I won the runner-up award for non-fiction. Yay! What a wonderful surprise.

My article was "A Man Cloth'd in Goat-Skins" in Cricket's January 2012 issue, about an 18th-century castaway named Alexander Selkirk.

Congratulations to Katy and Diana and all of the other winners!

Thanks, everyone! Franzilla, you're right. Selkirk spent four years alone on an island 400 miles west of Chile, and people think he was the model for Robinson Crusoe. Or one of them, anyway. There were other castaways that probably influenced Daniel Defoe too.

Title: Re: SCBWI Magazine Merit Awards
Post by: DianaM on August 05, 2014, 01:32 PM
Thanks, Sara!

I received a phone call last year. It was early May and then the official notice went up about a week or two later (though she said I was free to share right away).

Perhaps they moved it to August to give themselves more time to consider the entries.

Looks like I won for poetry again! I can't believe it!

I got a message from the SCBWI award organizer on Tuesday but only saw it yesterday.

The poem that won is called "Ocean Beach". I wrote it after visiting the beach with my kids. It was accepted in 2011.

The official results are not up yet. I suppose they might go up next week.

Sara, I'm amazed that your daughter drew that at six! I can imagine a whole illustration style based on that. Don't you just love kid art? My fridge doesn't have a drop of space left on it!

Ev, the poem was published in Highlights. I think it was a quarter-page. And I just realized, this is the second time I had an ocean-themed poem win! I guess I should hit the beach more often.
