Title: Frog dissection?
Post by: mghiggins on February 15, 2013, 09:54 AM
Does anyone know if high-school students still dissect actual frogs in biology class? It would sure help my contemporary WIP if they do, but I've heard that's not the case anymore.  :frog:

In 2011 it was widespread enough that it was news when California banned them:

So, sounds like the practice is on its way out, but still done in enough high schools that it's plausible.

My daughter's 9th grade (HS) Adv Bio class will do that this spring. Ribbit.

My daughter's 3rd grade class just did frogs. I think it's pigs in the upper school.

Our HS jr. daughter's Advanced Bio class dissected them earlier this year, and the teacher hasn't gotten around to disposing of them, so they're sitting there in a case. Our daughter walks the long way to her seat to avoid going past them.  :P

My daughters did both frogs and pigs in 10th grade biology in our school (Massachuetts) two years ago.

My husband is a biology teacher and they still dissect lots of stuff: earthworms, frogs, sharks, fetal pigs, etc.  The latter are in more advanced classes.
