Title: Picture Books with Magical Theme?
Post by: taralazar on July 03, 2013, 06:55 AM
I'm seeking PBs with magic! (Yes, they are all magical to us, but I'm looking for the actual theme, LOL.) I'm looking for books more about everyday "magic" than the abra-cadabra type. But feel free to shoot me any magical title!

And Happy 4th, USA!

I think TOO MANY MITTENS (http://www.amazon.com/Many-Mittens-Florence-Louis-Slobodkin/dp/B002YU0PX6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372863155&sr=8-1&keywords=too+many+mittensTOO MANY MITTENS) by Florence & Louis Slobodkin has a touch of magical realism. And it's not a PB, but THE VELVETEEN RABBIT (http://www.gutenberg.org/files/11757/11757-h/11757-h.htm) is one of my favorite magical stories.

Thank you! "Magical realism" is exactly what I'm seeking. I could not recall the term! (I'm getting old...)

 :thankyou

And here I was thinking what exactly is 'everyday magic'? My daughter's smile? A rainbow? I need a coffee... brain hasn't started up yet.

Imogen's Antlers. Love that book. Some Dogs Do! (Where the dog can fly – I love that book but it makes my daughter cry... because none of the others believe him.)

That's just it, isn't it? It isn't magic to the little ones; it's real.

I'm not sure I'm on the right track, but what about WHEN A DRAGON MOVES IN by Jodi Moore or I NEED MY MONSTER by Amanda Noll?

So, are you saying non-witchy magic?

How about SYLVESTER AND THE MAGIC PEBBLE. Gosh, I love that book. Can't seem to think of anything else at the moment.

THE TALKING EGGS, maybe?

Yeah, non-witchy magic and non-magician magic. Just a magical element that doesn't have a wand and go "poof". LOL.

I love SYLVESTER, too.  :love5:

I love SYLVESTER and STREGA NONA.

EXTRA YARN by Mac Barnett

I was just thinking EXTRA YARN...love everything about that book!

I love magic realism, in adult fiction as well as in children's lit. I come from a theatre background and can easily suspend disbelief...and I think that's what magic realism does so well. It draws us in to a place where we just can't help but choose to believe.

I wish I could come up with some other books.  I'm completely disabled when it comes to remembering titles...

I'm so glad you asked this question, Tara, because I was just wondering the same thing!

A lot of picture books have some kind of magical element, I think, but one book I love that falls squarely in this category is Willoughby and the Moon. Willoughby wakes up one night and discovers the moon in his closet. He visits the moon and plays with some snails who live there.

Thanks for starting this thread, Tara! I love books that include a magical element—Mem Fox's The Magic Hat, Elisa Kleven's The Wishing Ball, Tony Johnston's The Witch's Hat, Ana Juan's The Night Eater, Kat Yeh's The Magic Brush, Angela Johnson's Lily Brown’s Paintings, and David McPhail's Bear’s Toothache.

My Dinosaur by Mark Alan Weatherby
The Dragon and the Unicorn by Lynne Cherry
Tuesday by David Wiesner (any of his books really)
Lu and the Swamp Monster by James Carville
and I always thought The Kissing Hand was magical.

Hi all, I'm loving all the examples here. Here are my suggestions: a lot of the work by Steven Kellogg, Billy Twitters and his Blue Whale problem (does that count or is that just odd realism?), Cows that Type, The Polar Express.
