Title: Mermaid sounds? Siren call?
Post by: crookedbook on October 01, 2013, 09:44 AM
I'm stumped - I want to incorporate mermaid dialogue into my PB and I'd like something whimsical, and "siren-y" - I'm open for suggestions. I've played with made up words (Nonny nonny ne) and salty phrases (slipping through silver deep) - it's for a refrain. I know that's' vague but any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

I always imagine mermaids voices being kind of ocean-y, by which I mean there'd be a rhythm to what they say (waves) and lots of 'ssh' type sounds. In reality, that might make a mermaid sound rather like Kaa from The Jungle Book, though! He was a great character.

Sorry, I'm not much help!

PS I just noticed on that site they have a section called 'Shell Phones.' Oh ho ho ho, I love that!

Typically, mermaids lured foolish seamen onto dangerous rocks by singing beautiful songs they couldn't resist. I think something musical and rhythmical with a luring sort of lilt would fit the bill. Of course that's easier to say than to produce. Good luck with this. I can imagine how the perfect refrain would be a true asset to the story.

I don't know why, but I imagine lots of Ls, Ms, Ns and vowels, to create soft lullaby sounds, like "lalyn" and "minali".
