Title: Highlights - What Constitutes as an Adventure Story?
Post by: ChickenGrease on December 07, 2013, 06:01 PM
One of Highlights current needs is adventure stories.  What exactly would happen in an adventure story for Highlights?  What kind of story would it be?  Can you direct me to any sample stories?  (I can't seem to find anything "adventurous" in my sample reading)

Picture the age range you're writing for. Then consider what kids that age would consider an adventure to be. An adventure for 7-9 year olds might be camping in the back yard.
But 9-12 year-old readers would expect a camping adventure to take place away from home. Keep in mind that Highlights has taboos against fighting, violence, or any adult portrayed in a negative way. Hope this helps.

Poodles, I've read exciting racing stories, stories of survival (some historical), and even animal stories that would be considered adventure.
Good luck finding the big and small adventures you'd like to write about.

Thanks for your responses!  They do give me a better idea of what to write about.  :-)
