My husband has a Swedish work colleague. What word do you need? I can ask him to ask his colleague.

Thanks, EL. The word is Kaninhop (sometimes spelled with two 'p's). The colleague will probably laugh when he hears it because it is a rabbit jumping competition.

I appreciate your help!

Hi KatyD - he says he'll ask him tomorrow (it's evening here already). I'm curious too since the spelling of the word is so similar to German - wondering if the pronunciations will be similar too.

Thanks so much, EL, and to your husband and his colleague as well. I owe you one!

I tried typing the word and then looking it up through my word program's dictionary. Got all sorts of definitions and some fun YouTube links. But no pronunciation guide.

Thanks for doing that, Bobi!

I'd searched, too--I can usually google and at least get an audio of the word--but I couldn't find anything, so I thought someone here might know.  8)

Hi Katy - so Swedish friend says it's pronounced

kuhNEENhop

emphasis on the second syllable. And he says it definitely needs the second P.

And now we all know. Not sure when I'll be able to use kaninhopp in a sentence, much less a story, but at least I'll be able to say it correctly. (This coming from one who--at 12--thought she was reading a book about the Sigh-ox Indians until a ROFL relative said it was pronounced Sue. Really? Sioux=Sue?)

That's funny, Bobi. I hate not knowing how to pronounce things, so I often find myself googling.

Bobi, I learned how to pronounce Sioux when I had just learned to read, from the label for Sioux Bee ("Sue Bee") honey that was sold in the Midwest. I stored it up because I was sure it would come up in school and the teacher would ask about it, but it never did!
