Title: Posting in old topics
Post by: Franzilla on June 30, 2014, 05:41 AM
Have we lost the feature that warned people about the age of a thread/topic? Some really ancient posts of mine, and other people's, have been commented on recently and although it's not a disaster it is a little annoying when you find yourself posting a comment to a question a person has raised several years ago!

Thanks!

It's still there, but it's at the bottom. I can't recall if it is readily seen when you post. I don't think it is, though.

Thank you for bringing this up, Franzilla! I've been checking the dates of every post lately because of this. It's great to have archives and revive posts once in a while, but lately there have been so many of them. Part of the problem is that information in that post may no longer be relevant if it's a topic where the industry has changed. So, it's great to read them and see what once was, but not everyone notices they are old threads, and may use that information for research and submissions, which isn't helpful. And even if you're not doing that, but are just joining the conversation, it's annoying when you figure out it's not a current conversation, but ancient history. Those that were having the conversation when it was posted have moved on.

Is there a way to lock the threads, and people could link to them (as a read only thread) in their new thread if they wanted to? Or make it super obvious that it's an old thread that's been revived?

Seems like this could make a lot of extra work for moderators as well, and they already do a ton of work!

You're right, we don't want to add work to their load! I just wondered if there was a magic 'on' switch so that old warning system would work again. But if it is there, as Arona said, maybe it's just not as visible as it used to be? I haven't seen any warnings... but maybe you only get the warning if you're the first poster on that thread.

It's not a disaster but as you said, Stephanie, it can be a bit annoying when you realise you're giving advice to someone who, by now, has probably solved their problem and got a whole load of new ones!

The warning only shows up for the first person who posts, I think, not for subsequent posts.  So a new person posts on an old topic; then it shows up in your new posts feed and you reply . . .

I actually like the idea of locking all very old threads so they can be there for reference but aren't able to be posted in anymore (except by Administrators and Moderators). I'll see if there's any way we can do that "automatically" in the system. (Like after several months of inactivity.) It might have to be done thread by thread by the moderators, though, which would be a tremendous amount of work, considering the massive amount of threads on this board!

Ooh that'd be great, Verla... as long as, as you say, it doesn't require doing each thread individually! Way too much work for something that's not a major problem.

Thanks!

Franzilla, I meant that it was a lot of work to monitor old threads. Was hoping there would be an easy fix that would be less work for the mods.

Verla, I hope there's an auto-fix you can find! Don't want to make even more work for the mods! Is this something they could maybe do when things pop up (instead of all at once, which would be a lot of time/work)? Or maybe it could be an auto fix for new threads/posts and the old ones would be grandfathered in?

Verla is working on it -- thanks for the suggestions :)

I have found a perfect program to add to the message board to take care of situations like this, Franzilla, but first it will have to be checked to make sure it won't clash with SCBWI's database - because now that our board is part of their database, we need them (the Blueboard and SCBWI's database) to "play nicely" together. As long as this can be done, we will be able to implement this new program.

Fingers crossed, Verla!

Franzilla - yay! I think I was confused. That's what I get for responding late at night ;)
