Title: Do magazines accept text with illustrations?
Post by: Franzilla on July 29, 2014, 07:24 AM
So I know that book publishers like to find their own illustrators for text but that they like author/illustrators too (just not one author with an illustrator!) but what about magazines? Or does it just depend on each magazine?

I've got a poem that I'd love to illustrate but I don't want to submit something that won't work, obviously.

Anyone have any experience with this?

I have absolutely no experience with this (other than simple line drawings that are part of a puzzle), but I think it'd certainly be worth trying. Magazines don't have the big investment in a single poem/illustration that picture book publishers have, so my guess is that they'd be much more inclined to accept an illustrated poem--assuming, of course, that they like both the poem and the illustration.

Thanks, Ev! I think I will give it a shot. Worst thing they can do is say no, right?

Great!  I'll be pulling for you.

Having seen some of your work, I'm guessing the editor will be delighted to receive your submission.  :gogirl

Fran,

It really depends on the magazine. Some are open to photos and anything else you are able to include. What you might want to do is send the poem alone but then state in your query that you also have an illustration that is available to go with it should they like to take a look. Then you give them the option.

That's a great idea. I could just add the link to my site. Thanks!

Just to add to M.D. Laurel's post, I found some magazines that made it clear they're much more likely to accept a piece with accompanying photos. But admittedly, that was for non-fiction. For fiction, I imagine you'd have the same advantage that an author-illustrator for PBs would have: if they like your style, I assume it would appeal to them that you know the text that intimately. Go for it! :0)

I'd take a look at issues and see how they publish their poetry. If there are usually five poems on a page with a spot illustration for each, you'll need to illustrate accordingly. Also, check the guidelines for art submissions. It's all about the design work for the overall magazine. Good luck.

It depends on the magazine, Siski. I once made a sketch in crayon to go with my text to Ladybug. They hired a professional artist to go with it. But another time, Odyssey accepted the photos I sent with my article. Good luck! Your illustrations are so vibrant, I am sure it will be the perfect complement to your text.

There's a big difference between photos and illustrations: editors welcome photos because the author may have access to photos through researching their topic, attending an event, or conducting interviews, and it means less photo research for the editor. Illustrations are different, especially since they are usually vetted by the art director or designer, not so much the editor. I don't see any problem with submitting an illustration along with a poem, as long as you realize that there are no guarantees that both will be accepted. But if they're professional quality, it certainly can't hurt.

Thank you everyone. Yes, I've been looking at submission guidelines and most are pretty clear. The Carus Publishing/Cricket group especially! (Hello Marcia! It's me, Franziska. I write the Iguana teacher guides.)

I'm not ready to submit my poem or poem/illustration yet... still working on the poem! But it definitely helps to focus my energies if I know what I'm likely to submit.

And, thank you, Vijaya, for the vibrant comment! I do hope they go with the text... we'll see!

And I write the Cobblestone guides. That makes us teachers' guide sisters.

Congratz again on the move, Marcia.
