Title: Names for puppies
Post by: Debby G on November 15, 2014, 10:46 AM
I'd love suggestions on a name for a male puppy who's timid. Naming puppies based on their personalities is a subplot in the chapter book I'm writing, but I can't think of anything really good for a timid puppy.

Also, I named another puppy Spunky in my draft because of his personality, but I'm not sure that is working well. I'd appreciate suggestions for other personality traits in a puppy that could lead to a new name.

Thank you!

You might try a thesaurus for words like slinks, timid (Maybe Timmie Timid?), hidden, etc.

Our (small) dog is aggressive, and his name is Ernie. It works for him. Our last dog was friendly and was Waggsy.

Just a side note--we had friends with a miniature black poodle named Moose. He didn't work out for them, so they gave him to a rich lady who gave him a diamond collar and named him Pierre. After that, he behaved beautifully. Apparently he was just indignant at being called "Moose."

For a shy male puppy: Startle, Blinky, Quiver

For a spunky puppy: Sparky, Plucky

LOL, Katie. Poor Moose.

These names sound a bit timid to me: Bean, Goober, Kiwi, Socks, Waldo, Cecil

For a more outgoing dog: Elvis, Dash, Rascal, Comet

What breed and colour/markings? My sister breeds Chihuahuas and I've helped name a few of them.

Ideas off the top of my head:

Boo, Spooky, Wisp, Twitch

Hope that helps!

We almost named our dog "Scout," which might be cute for the outgoing pup.

I like Rue's "Boo" for the shy one.
 :)

Edited to add: I just noticed the Scout/Boo (Radley) connection. No wonder I like the sound of those names together--classic!
