Title: For illustrator/writers - do you sketch & write daily?
Post by: marla-lesage on January 10, 2015, 06:51 PM
I find I go through a spurt of sketching or painting daily, then a very productive writing spurt, but I don't usually do both on the same day (except for the occasional thumbnail sketch). Although I do try to keep a small sketch book handy.
(My day job is not writing/illustrating related but as a mom I do get to multiple picture books on a daily basis.)

What do you do?

Usually only one or the other. But lately neither. While I've been working on the ebook html in Sigil and print layout in InDesign I've been on a bit of a break. I'm almost done though, and once its all online and for sale I'll go back to my daily routine of writing or drawing.

During my commute to my day job I ride a 25min ferry, so Im usually wirking on stuff then.

Certainly not every day. My day job is creative (but separate from my children's books/comics work) so I draw pretty frequently, but I've grown lax on sketching and am perfectly happy to let days slide without touching pen to paper (though I really should get better about it). Often I find that I swap my focus - I'll do just art for a few weeks, then set the art aside and focus on writing, rinse and repeat. I do have days where I do both, but it's not the norm for me. I think it's hard for me to switch gears that quickly - I'm either in an art mindset or a writing mindset, but rarely mix the two, strangely enough!

I tend to lately be in mainly a non writing but illustrating slump latelly. But usually I tend to do a writing 1,000 words, illustration, write 1,000 words schedule daily.
