Title: MG/YA historical fiction recommendations
Post by: darshana on August 12, 2015, 10:19 AM
I'm going on vacation and looking to load up my Kindle and Audible with good historical fiction recommendations from within the last 3-5 years. YA preferably, MG okay.

Here are the ones I already know about.

The Hired Girl - to read list
The Book Thief - read and loved!!
Under a Painted Sky - enjoyed very much and I don't even like westerns.
Code Name Verity - not for me, felt lost with all the jargon and the unreliable character
Hattie Big Sky - currently reading
Octavian Nothing - didn't finish, language was too high-brow.
Ruta Sepetys books - to read list

Thanks,
Darshana

It feels funny to plug it thus, but I think my published book fits what you are looking for... The Voice of Thunder .
I'm reading Avi's SEE YOU LATER, TRAITOR and I think it is a good book.

Moon over Manifest by Claire Vanderpool
Starcursed by Nandini Bajpai
Rose Under Fire, companion to Code Name Verity but I loved it even more. Less jargon. More heart.

Enjoy your vacation!

AUDACITY by Melanie Crowder is on my To Read list and has been getting many starred reviews. (That one is YA) I second WAR THAT SAVED MY LIFE. And I really enjoyed KATERINA'S WISH and SEARCHING FOR SILVERHEELS by Jeannie Mobley. (I'd classify those last three are upper-MG)

I wish I had a good book to recommend you, but I still have to catch up with my YA and MG reading...

Happy vacation, Darshana!
