Title: Does anyone know anything about this?
Post by: marla-lesage on August 28, 2015, 04:55 PM
http://blueberryillustrations.com/  I stumbled across it today. I don't understand why they don't identify who the illustrators are. Any insights?
Or thoughts on working with self-publishers?

I've never heard of them but their site throws up all sorts of red flags for me. Their model seems to remove an illustrator's right to fair pay for their work, credit for their work, as well as ownership.

Seems sketchy to me. At least from a professional illustrator's point of view.

Well said, Arty. Thanks for pointing this out.

I was just looking at their site a bit more, and in one spot they claim that the author needs to own the copyright to the illustrations in order to publish or self publish, and this just isn't true. A lot of their information is erroneous or misleading. They also offer web design services, and they have body text in script font on their website, which for web design is considered a no no. They also have very awkward grammar throughout, which looks unprofessional and doesn't instill confidence in their services.

I've seen this type of offer under other names. $70 per illustration for all rights is ludicrous. Grammar is awful, web design is awful and the illustrations are stylistically similar in more than one instance. The art banner on the front has things listed in first person, which leads me to believe this is not a company, but one individual.

My feeling on the matter is is you get what you pay for. Self-publishers who want to pay rock bottom pricing for illustration, design and branding will get below industry standard services and book sales to match. Buyer beware.

From a provider standpoint, if someone is unwilling or unable to afford my fee, they are not the right client for me. From a professional industry member standpoint, this person could use with some education on why what she is doing is detrimental to the rest of the industry. By devaluing her own work, she is devaluing the industry as a whole. But that's a soap box for another time.

There are competent illustrators, designers and editors out there, they are easy to find. This place isn't one of them.

What Wendy said. I would steer clear of them, whether you are an author planning to self-publish or an illustrator looking for work...

It could just be a starving artist trying to create their own biz. Maybe they don't really know how the pros work. But I'd give them the benefit of the doubt, though not my buck.

They say they've illustrated 250 books in ten years so I would have hoped they'd have learned something about the industry in that time.  I'm all for benefit of the doubt, but they claim to be industry leaders and employ industry experts, but I see no evidence to back up the claim.

Didn't notice that with my quick look-see. That is sketchy. At the very least, they're not being honest about their skill set. There are SO many people out there scamming money out of writers who are desperate to be published. At least warnings like this thread are out there.

That's exactly how I feel too, Dionna. A lot of first time authors and new writers are vulnerable. This site may not intend to take advantage but authors should have as much info as possible before choosing to work with them.

You're right, it doesn't seem serious...
