Title: "Middle Schools" in California -- what grades?
Post by: virginia-campen on January 31, 2016, 06:17 AM
Back when I went to school in So. Cal., 'middle school' was grades 7-9, and High School was 10-12.

Is this still typical?  Or at least plausible?  How are current schools usually divided?

Thanks!

I teach in CA and have taught middle school.  Even in the same town middle school varies by district.  It can be 6-8, 7-8, 7-9 and at one school I taught at it was 5-8.

Yes, I agree. It depends on the district.

Some CA school districts don't have middle school at all (including the So Cal district where I went to school many, many years ago and which is still--amazingly--the same). Elementary is K-8 and High School is 9-12.

I thought a junior high was 7-9 and a middle school ended at 8 but could start younger than six. Find schools in the area you're using online and look up their grade levels. All schools have websites these days.

I'm in Nor Cal and it varies so widely. 6-8 for some middle schools, 7-8 for others. My husband works at a 6-12 school, but it's a private school.

Our kids have gone to school in 7 different districts around the country/world, and my husband additionally grew up and went to school in California. And the absolute rule about what grades middle school cover is...there is no absolute rule. It completely depends on what buildings of what size a district has in determining which grades they put in which buildings. I've seen 6-8 and also 5-7 (in that case, there's a jr high squeezed in between middle and high school, for 8-9ish).

For fictional purposes, I think anything you come up with within the range discussed here will be plausible. It's YOUR school! Your fictional town, your buildings, your superintendent and school board. You have powerzzz! :)

Rose is right -- not only about your powers (ha) but about the randomness of it. Even within one school district, we have four different types which cover middle school: 7-12, K-8, 6-8, and 7-8.

My middle school switched in mid-stream -- when I got there it was 7-8, then it switched to 6-7-8! (They also changed their name - they had been Jr High and switched to Middle School, or else vice-versa. IT WAS A CONFUSING TIME! ;-) )
