Title: When to query Highlights?
Post by: Orchid on November 07, 2016, 12:49 PM
I have a poem submission to Highlights and it has been over 3 months now and status shows "In Progress" on Submittable. Since this is my first time submitting something to the magazine world, I am not sure how long should I wait before status query? And even if I do SQ, not sure who to send to? There are no email addresses mentioned on the Highlights submissions page? Does anyone here have experience in SQing through Submittable?
Title: Re: When to query Highlights?
Post by: DianaM on November 07, 2016, 12:54 PM
I don't think you can sq through submittable.

I believe they're just running late. I've had a poem "in-progress" with them for almost 5 months.

In any case, I probably wouldn't try to sq till after 6 months.

I also have fiction with them ('in progress' for almost 3 months). So I'm waiting too, though I think now poetry and fiction go through different editors? The nice thing about Submittable is that we always know the status of our submissions. With snail mail, I always worried that maybe something got lost in the mail. Of course, frequent refreshing of Submittable is another problem. :)

Good luck to both of you!

Thanks Starfish and Diana. Looks like there is more wait time ahead of me, sigh

I thought I had patience but it is oh, so hard to keep looking at the status on Submittable! And yes, I keep refreshing my email as well :)

Good luck to both of you as well.

I'm another who's waiting. I submitted 3 poems 4 1/2 months ago.

Maybe we should just create a waiting party. Anybody got some good author jokes to tell? I'll serve the  :cupcake and  :donut2 and :cake . Oops! That last is a birthday cake. But I guess we're all waiting/hoping for the birth of our published pieces. Maybe serving birthday cake will speed that process along.

Best wishes to all of you.  :crossedfingers

I'll join in! I've only been waiting a month on an article, so I know the response won't be coming for a looong time. Don't have an author joke, but here's a cute writing-related quote:

From now on, ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put.

I love it, Sara!  :lol4

My mom actually used to quote that when I was growing up. A fun memory!

I never heard that one, Sara! I love it!

Great idea to start a waiting party. I was just wondering the other day if anybody else was waiting on them. I usually hear back quicker. Ah, the waiting. It never ends.  :popcorngirl Snacks help.

Let's see, author jokes. Knock knock. Who's there? Writer. Writer who? Writer now I'm making up a really, really bad author joke.  :moose

Good luck to everyone waiting!  :clover

I've had a story poem in-progress for close to 4 months. It went into review the day after I subbed it.

I'm keeping busy writing other stuff but I'm still going crasy.  I think if I have to wait 6 months then I might as well quit checking it twice a day. Ha, ha.

Hey guys, the Trench threads are all about waiting--there's a new one each month.

And yes, you need to learn not to check your email and Submittable all day.  I completely understand!  Back in the day, I'd run to the mailbox every day and be devastated when I realized it was a federal holiday and no mail was coming!  But it will make you nuts.

Write something new like Jojocookie is doing!

Oh, I agree totally with you, Anne Marie and Sharon, about the Trench. It's a great place.

But this was a waiting party specifically about Highlights since there are so many of us.

Yup. Just wanted to make sure everybody knew about the Trenches.

Yay for the waiting party! From what it sounds like, we are going to be here for a while so I might as well bring some  :turkey2 since it is Turkey month anyway :)

On a blog I read few days ago (I don't remember which one now) there was a writer who said that he heard back on couple of his poems within 3 weeks but this was from High Five. I wonder if different magazines within Highlights have different response times? I have 1 poem (>3 months since submission) and 1 puzzle (1 month) with Highlights and 1 poem with Hello (1 month).

I don't know about the trenches :new (that's quite a name, btw)
Title: Re: When to query Highlights?
Post by: DianaM on November 08, 2016, 09:39 AM
In the past I have found that High Five does tend to be a little quicker in responding than Highlights. They probably don't get as many subs.

Then again, I subbed a poem to them about 2 weeks ago and it hasn't even moved to "in-progress" yet.

I am totally a compulsive checker. Drives me nuts.

They take a while to process them and to publish them. I'd be patient and get busy with something else. I don't believe they've ever lost anything of mine. Good luck!

Title: Re: When to query Highlights?

Not yet, but I still have a little longer before my wait time becomes unusual. Just curious though. Is there anyone here waiting on fiction or is it mainly poetry? I subbed fiction. The wait time for that has been anywhere from 3 weeks to 3-4 months or so.
Title: Re: When to query Highlights?
Post by: jojocookie on November 14, 2016, 12:48 PM
Yes, I agree. My wait time for fiction has usually been a month. This time I subbed two poems. Going on four months now.
Title: Re: When to query Highlights?
Post by: Orchid on November 14, 2016, 02:00 PM
Wow..so I just got a reject from Hello for a short poem :( Rejection reason was "not suitable for present needs because Hello is undergoing a redesign". That makes it 5 weeks turnaround time.
Title: Re: When to query Highlights?
Post by: Starfish on November 14, 2016, 02:38 PM
Just saw that Highlights updated their needs for Hello on submittable...
Title: Re: When to query Highlights?
Post by: Orchid on November 14, 2016, 02:46 PM
Yes, when I submitted to them a month ago they still had their previous needs. I think they must have recently updated. The form rejection still sounded pretty polite (compared to Cricket) -

Dear author,

Thank you for sharing with us your manuscript "<manuscript title>." We enjoyed reading it, but we regret to say that it is not suited to our present needs. Hello is undergoing a redesign. You can read about our new direction on the Submittable page for Hello. (Click on "more.")

Although we cannot accept your manuscript, please don’t be discouraged. What we are unable to use here may be eagerly accepted elsewhere.

Thanks again for thinking of Highlights Hello as you work.

Sincerely,
The Editors
Highlights Hello

I got a rejection from High Five in less than a month. Subbed on 10/26. Strangely, it never even moved to "in progress". Just went straight to rejection. Still waiting on a bunch of poems from Highlights.
Title: Re: When to query Highlights?
Post by: Starfish on November 16, 2016, 01:56 PM
So sorry to hear about the rejection, Diana. I had a piece once with Highlights that never went to 'In Progress,' either. Not sure what that means. Good luck with resubmitting and with your poems!
Title: Re: When to query Highlights?
Post by: DianaM on November 16, 2016, 02:42 PM
Thanks, Starfish! No worries. I've got a bazillion rejections. Comes with the territory. :D

But I must admit, I'd be pretty disappointed if Highlights didn't take anything this round. I feel like I sent them some pretty strong stuff.

Can I join the party? This is actually my first post here but I'm a long-time reader now.

I have stories sitting with High Five and Highlights plus a poem with Hello. I've had stories submitted since them rejected so I was fairly hopeful...

I'm in the Highlights waiting game too. I just submitted a requested revision to High Five a few days ago. You all inspired me to check if it has moved to "In Progress" yet. Nope.

It's a holiday week, so I wouldn't be surprised if the editors focusing more on finishing work already on their plates rather than cracking open new submissions. Hope they get around to some of you who have been waiting a while.

Title: Re: When to query Highlights?
Post by: Dionna on November 23, 2016, 10:23 AM
I sub'd a historical-fiction poem about playing in fire-hydrant spray to Highlights via Submittable in April and heard back from them in October. They liked the poem but rejected it because the activity was deemed unsafe by the city. (I guess the city in which the poem took place, Chicago.) In the past, when I sub'd to Highlights via snail mail, I'd hear back right away if it was rejected. And not right away when they were considering it. So I say be happy for the wait. It's a good sign.

Title: Re: When to query Highlights?
Post by: ChickenGrease on November 29, 2016, 02:20 PM
For those of you wondering what it means to get rejected before your submission even makes it to "in progress", I can answer that!

I have a very small online journal myself, and we use Submittable as the "mailbox" for submissions. Let's say I get a submission. I, the editor, can open your story and read it, but it will not change the status to "in progress". Next to your submission, on the right-hand side, there will be a thumbs up, thumbs down, and a circle meaning "maybe". If I select thumbs up, down, or maybe, your submission changes to "in progress". OR, if I forward your submission to another editor for reading, it'll also show "in progress".

In conclusion, my guess is that an editor may have read your submission, and took it upon him/herself to send you the formal letter without passing it on to anyone else. I have done that a few times. It certainly doesn't mean I didn't like the submission, I just didn't feel it was right for the journal. That could be the case with High Five. Their recent changes are resulting in the straight-to rejections.

Actually, I will attach a screenshot of what your submission looks like from the editor's point of view. I even submitted a fake manuscript to myself, ha. This is how the editor reads your submission. I used to get curious, too. He-he. I blocked out my own name, and name of my journal, for privacy.

My poem submission has now crossed the 4 month mark and math puzzle has crossed the 2-month mark. I am expecting that the puzzle submission also has a long wait ahead before I hear anything on that one too (also, holidays will be here in couple of weeks!)

Did anyone hear anything yet? Or at least revision requests, may be?
Title: Re: When to query Highlights?

No, not from Highlights. Normally, I would've heard by now (3.5 months) for fiction. Maybe they're behind?
Title: Re: When to query Highlights?
Post by: DianaM on December 12, 2016, 10:07 AM
I've been waiting 6 months on a poem and still haven't heard. Way longer than they usually take. I guess they're behind. I don't expect to hear anything before the holidays.

Good luck!

For any/all who are waiting, I just saw this posted on the response times board for Highlights:   If your submissions were fiction, sit tight. Joëlle Dujardin was out on leave Aug-Oct. She's behind with her manuscript reviews, but no doubt working hard to catch up.

Title: Re: When to query Highlights?

My sub is approaching the 5.5 months mark and still shows "In Progress".
Title: Re: When to query Highlights?
Post by: Starfish on January 18, 2017, 01:03 PM
Not on my August sub. But the editor did email me to say that one of my previously accepted pieces (fiction) will appear in the September issue this year! Yay!

I think it will be a while before we hear back on "in progress" subs. I had read in a market guide that Highlights gets more than a thousand subs a month... I can only imagine if someone's away for a couple of months, that's a lot to catch up on... Working on new stuff in the mean time - and for the first time, writing some books, too!
Title: Re: When to query Highlights?

Title: Re: When to query Highlights?

It's my understanding there are different editors for fiction, poetry and nonfiction. I've heard response times for nonfiction are generally a lot longer than fiction (I've never subbed nonfiction there though).

Congrats to CarrieLee and Sara!

I forgot to report in here, but I got an acceptance on an 11/18/16 poetry submission to Highlights High Five a couple of weeks ago. It was an R&R, which might be why they got to it so quickly.

I know we've been talking about Highlights on this thread, but I've been wondering if anyone is having a longer than normal wait with Ladybug as well? I' just crossed the 8 month mark myself.

1/6/17 - 3/7/17 Acceptance on a fiction sub to HL High Five
Waiting to hear on a sub to HL (also subbed in January)
Also waiting to hear on Feb subs to Cricket mags (I'm sure those will be a while)

Completely forgot to update I had a rejection from Highlights last week from an August sub. They liked it but I'd pitched it a little too young for them (which isn't a shock as I tend to write for younger kids!)

Sorry, Christine but congrats on the personal feedback! Good luck getting it back out there!
Waiting on an Aug Highlights fiction sub. Just subbed fiction to High Five as well.

I have been waiting on three poems since September/early October.  I sure hope I hear soon.  Usually it doesn't take this long (at least in my experience) so I'm hoping the wait is a good thing?  Congrats to all of you who have gotten acceptances!  And also to those of you who have gotten feedback:).   Has anyone else recently heard back from Highlights?  I am new to this board by the way, so this is my first time posting:)

Orchid,

Regarding your inquiry on whether I'd heard on my June 2016 puzzle submission: Yes, a few weeks ago I received a personal rejection. They liked it and even tried it out on local elementary students. Unfortunately, it seemed a little too advanced for most. It was a math/logic puzzle. I've sold them several math/logic puzzles in the past, and Allison Kane, the Assistant Editor, said they'd love to see others. So I worked up another (simpler one) and sent it.

Thank you for asking and good luck on your own submissions.

Also, on a very happy note, Highlights did publish my poem "The Glumps" in this month's issue. It was originally accepted back in 2011. It was wonderfully illustrated and received a full page layout on page 7!

Orchid asked on March 1, 2017:

AzGuy,

Did you hear anything on your June 2016 puzzle submission? Or are you still waiting?
Title: Re: When to query Highlights?
Post by: Orchid on March 21, 2017, 09:54 PM
Thanks AzGuy for getting back to me. Sorry that you had a rejection on your puzzle but I am amazed that Highlights went out that far to try it out with local students. I don't have much experience with them because I haven't sold anything yet. I have a math puzzle too and I am not sure how complex/simple they would find it?

Congrats on the published poem. That's wonderful :)

Sending a hug and virtual chocolate, Starfish. I recently had a 7 month form "no" from one of the bug mags.  So hard when a longer wait gets your hopes up. (at least for me anyway)  But we keep on keeping on ...   :bangbreak

I would like to share that I just got 2 rejects from Hello within 9 days of submission. One was form and the other was personal with a comment on how my story was "well done" and invitation to submit more :) They are placing a 3-month moratorium on submissions and will have new guidelines for writers soon.

I'm so excited that this is my 2nd personal reject. :) I feel I'm so close...I am still waiting on a Math puzzle that I submitted in Dec. Fingers crossed!

Title: Re: When to query Highlights?
Post by: Sara on May 05, 2017, 04:18 PM
Sorry, James. I've sent many rebuses, and they've all been rejected. The HL rebus feature is a tough nut to crack, in my opinion! However, seems like 8 months meant they were considering it and a personal rejection is a good sign!

Commiserating with you on the reject, James. I'm another one who hasn't cracked the HL rebus nut.

Best wishes to you on your next sub.

Is the wait time still longer than usual or back to about 3 months?

Also, my story was published in the Sept 2017 issue. The turnaround time was a little over a year from acceptance to publication.
Title: Re: When to query Highlights?
Post by: Jayca on August 03, 2017, 09:52 AM
I just got an R from HL on a rebus...it was a 6 1/2 month wait...so I'd say responses are still running long. Although I do think it varies based on what you're subbing (I think NF pieces get a faster response, from what I've seen).

Congrats on your September story, Starfish! That's a pretty fast turnaround. I've waited many years before. (still waiting on one from a few years ago)
Title: Re: When to query Highlights?
Post by: James Roth on August 04, 2017, 11:52 AM
Yes, congratulations, Starfish, that is a fast road to pub with H (as Jayca said). Commiserations on R, Jayca. From what I've experienced, rebus submits are tough sells. Re: response times, I have a fiction sub (2/6/17) still out with them.

J

Update: Pers rej with note on 8/10/2017; this followed a status Q at four months, and a follow-up at five months.
