Title: Hi/Lo writing sample
Post by: iyerani on February 15, 2017, 12:32 PM
Hi All,

Need a bit of advice from the experienced members of the group. A publisher has asked me to send Hi/Lo writing samples for grades 4-5. What grade level should the text be? I am thinking grades 2-3 reading level. Is this correct? I have unpublished samples is it ok to send them out? Appreciate input from anyone who has more experience recommending some NF books to benchmark my writing.

Thanks so much! :thankyou

Hi! One piece of advice would be to take a look at the hi-lo books on the publisher's website for that age group. Do they list reading level? Otherwise, I think 2-3 would be about right, although I think I'd shoot more toward 2 than 3. It really depends on the publisher and how hi-lo they really are. Some publishers say they're hi-lo but their books are more for "struggling" readers, which can be much closer to grade level. Unpublished samples should be fine.

Another option would be to email the publisher who sent you the request and ask them.

Good luck!!
