Title: Adult commercial fiction
Post by: Gatz on May 17, 2018, 04:37 PM
As a companion to "Adult Literary Fiction," can anyone recommend really well-written but unashamedly commercial novels or story collections?

Nothing with "Grey" in the title, preferably, nor one of James Patterson's co-authored pieces.

Thanks,
Gatz

I've really liked Jodi Piccoult's books and Alexander McCall's series set in Botswana featuring Precious Ramstowe.

If paranormal is acceptable, I love Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson series. Don’t let the covers fool you.

Thanks!  These look like good starting points.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE The Rook by Daniel O'Malley. The sequel, Stiletto, is out too (and also very good). If you imagine X-Men, crossed with Jason Bourne, crossed with Dilbert, you're mostly there. It's about a secret magical organization in London from the point of view of one its best bureaucrats--and someone is trying to kill her.

You could try to Easy Rawlins mysteries by Walter Mosley. He writes literary fiction too, but you don't have to hold that against him.

Sue Kidd Monk's - Invention of Wings  really enjoyed this book a delight to read, too.  And Gargoyle.

Well, I like mystery/suspense -- Kendra Elliot is one of my new favorites (she's the author), especially her Mercy series (it starts with A Merciful Death).  Karen Robards also has a new short series going -- the first is called The Ultimatum.

Thanks for these good suggestions and for taking the time to offer them.
