Title: Charlesbridge Storytelling Math Call for Submissions
Post by: carrots on July 16, 2018, 10:57 AM
While reviewing the Charlesbridge submissions guidelines, I noticed a call for submissions I'd not seen before....

Charlesbridge and a STEM education center are partnering on an initiative to create better and more diverse math storybooks. Yay!!
Submissions will be accepted via email until  September 1. Here are the particulars:

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0750/0101/files/Storytelling-Math-Call-for-Submissions.pdf?14909534260749705531

Best wishes, all!!   :yippee

Edited to add:  After rereading the details, I should clarify that the editor is looking for fiction. Still, it may be fitting for this post to remain in the NF section, since the story would have strong a non-fiction underpinning.

Thank you for this! I've never tried writing anything of this sort and think it's just the thing to get my brain working in a different way!

Thanks so much for sharing, Gretchen!  Sounds like a great opportunity!!  Awesome that Charlesbridge and a STEM education center are partnering on this project! And as a kindergarten teacher, I'm always looking for stories that tie in math in a fun way!

Thank you for posting this!  :stars3

I'd been tossing around ideas for math-based fiction in my head, but hadn't really gotten around to committing to any of it. This is a great kick in the pants to get me to actually move forward on it!  :parrot

Just bumping this up as a reminder that we've only got a couple days until the deadline!!

(I've got to tweak my tweaks and hit "send," too!)

Best wishes, all!!

Thanks for the reminder! For some reason I'd thought it was the 15th - looks like my cover letter won't be quite as polished as I'd hoped. Oh well, better do what I can!

I just read my manuscript and realized it needs work to be what they're looking for. It was originally written to a work for hire call and almost accepted. It doesn't have enough story to fit this call, but I have ideas. No idea if I can revise and polish  in enough time for this, but I'm going to try.

Like Debbie, I am working on a story that might not be ready in time, but hope reigns eternal.
Good luck to all who are trying to make the deadline. V.

I've posted to the online crit area in the SCBWI section of the boards. No idea if it's good enough. I hate trying to judge my own work.

V, I hope your all-nighter pays off. Good luck to everyone else too.

The guidelines don't say if submissions should be attached or included in the body of the e-mail and the general guidelines are snail mail only. How have you all submitted?

Pasted story after the cover letter in the body of email.

I debated, too, but ultimately attached it.

Thanks, folks. I like attachments better because there aren't formatting issues, so I think I'll go that route.

Just sent mine - just under the wire!

I attached it as a separate document - I spent too much time stressing over PB manuscript formatting (this is only the second one I've submitted) to throw that away and put it in the body. : )

And it looks like there was no good luck for me. Anyone else hear back from them today? They did feel I pulled off math plus diversity in a story, but it wasn't right for their needs. Oh well. It was a whim anyway. Fingers still crossed for the rest of you.

Sorry, Debbie. Maybe you can submit it elsewhere?   What was your topic?  I sent them one featuring  sorting. Haven't heard anything yet.

Debbie,
I also received a rejection that said the exact same thing.  Sounds like it must have been a form letter.

I figured it was what I call a level two form. Level one is for those folks who didn't really follow the guidelines.

Sorry, Debbie. Maybe you can submit it elsewhere?   What was your topic?  I sent them one featuring  sorting. Haven't heard anything yet.

I covered very simple addition and subtraction in a sweet story that may have been too young for what they want.

Good luck to those who haven't heard yet. It looks there's still a chance of a BBer getting through.

I received the same sort of form  R on mine as well.  My ms focused on sorting.  Hugs to all and hope other BBers receive good news!

Haven't heard ... but then, I may never hear, right? (Years and years in this biz have trained me to have very low expectations!)

Susan, I hear you, but an open door is still better than a closed one. May it never slam shut.
