Title: thunder & lightning....

Here's a usage question:

Once the storm has blown away, would you say the thunder and lighting are "over" or "gone"?

Yes. There are blue skies and sometimes you can see it travelling away from you (just like you could see it coming your way).
You should come sit on my porch and listen to the song of the crickets, frogs, and birds after the storm. Call it research :)

I got so excited, I misread your question completely but you see, that wouldn't happen on the porch...

I'd be more likely to refer to the clouds or the storm as a whole. The thunder and lightning often end before the rain, before the storm is fully over. I bet you can watch great storm video online for research.

But either word will suffice.

I grew up in Eastern Upstate New York. Around here people usually speak of thunder and lightning being "gone" or possibly "done". The storm itself is usually "over" but it might be spoken of as "gone".

Interesting thread! I always love these usage questions. I would say "the thunder and lightning stopped." Of course we don't get much thunder and lightning here in Southern California. Wish we did!!
