Title: Rutgers One on One Plus
Post by: Debbie Vilardi on April 25, 2019, 06:08 PM
The applications for the Rutgers Conference are up.

For those of you who aren't familiar with this conference. It's a one day event in October that you have to apply for and be accepted to. You are paired with a one on one mentor for a critique. You also meet with four other pairs so you can ask any questions you have about the industry.

Check this link for more details: https://www.ruccl.org/index.html

I was accepted to attend in 2016 and it was one of the best conferences I've attended. If you are unagented, I highly recommend applying!
Good luck to all who do!

I've also attended twice and found it phenomenal. You can even pitch agents/editors during lunch.

So who's going? I'm excited (and maybe a little terrified) to be attending again. But I'm just back from vacation and haven't even read the full letter yet. It needs to sink in. Hoping there's more good news here.

There's a facebook group for RUCCL 2019. That's a good place to ask questions and meet fellow attendees. https://www.facebook.com/groups/586018428549967/

I'm going! I am very excited, but like Debbie a bit terrified too :) I haven't been before so don't really know what to expect. I have joined the facebook group and would love to hear from anyone else also attending.

Just joined the Facebook Group too. I may actually go by train instead of driving. Trying to figure out the relative costs in time and money.

Thanks for the congrats's. This is my third time attending, but it's been eight years. The schedule hasn't changed though.

My best advice is to follow the dos and don'ts they give. Research all of the mentees also so you can have some ideas about the people who might be in your five on five and your mentor. Make notes to refer to and don't be afraid to approach people with questions or even pitches. (Many will ask for them over the course of your chat.)

Sian, where are you staying? I'll be at the Hilton East Brunswick.

Anyone else?

Hi Debbie
I'm staying at Somerset Lofts - which looking on the map looks like it's in the opposite direction to you! I'm currently wondering whether to hire a car or just uber around (driving in places I don't know worries me a little). Is it easy to drive around New Brunswick?

I don't think it's too bad. There's info on one of the campus pages about parking there, but I won't have a car. I'll take a cab from the train to the hotel and hotel to conference. I can take a campus bus back to the train station. The nice thing is the hotel desk will be able to call the cab (or Uber) for me and there's a taxi stand at the train station.

Aha! I just came to check to see if Sian connected with other mentees.

The East Brunswick Hilton is typically a top choice for mentees. Someone usually organizes a Friday night dinner or get-together there each year.

If you don't want to drive, I'm sure Ubers will be available. It's just a few miles from the hotel to the Cook Campus Center.

There are also plenty of Taxis at Newark Airport. The Airport is Exit 13 on The NJ Turnpike and the East Brunswick Hilton is at Exit 9, between the two office towers you can see from the Turnpike.

Thanks for the info Tara. I was wondering about a Friday night dinner, but I haven't seen anything on the Facebook page or here yet about it. If you hear anything, please let us know.

Thanks Debbie and Tara :) I didn't choose the Hilton as the flights were quite pricy so I went with a cheaper option for the hotel! However, I do think I will probably drive so would definitely be up for meeting on the Friday night at the Hilton if something gets organised.  So yes, please do let us know, Tara.
Debbie, I'd say let's organise something ourselves but at the moment you are the only other person i know going! Hopefully some more people will join the facebook group nearer the time.

Sianey, I haven't heard of anyone else going either, but there are over 70 members listed on the Facebook group. Perhaps some will chime in there or here as the date gets closer.
