Title: Fill in the blank stories
Post by: Angela Ackerman (aka MOMZILLA) on February 06, 2006, 01:08 PM
Hi all,

I'm just wondering if anyone out there has had any luck placing fill-in-the-blank stories in any of the mag markets?  I've written one that I would like to send in, but not sure where...Iwas thinking of highlights because it is under 500 words and I know they would like to see more of that length for fiction.  Any ideas?  Has anyone placed this kind of story there or at another magazine?  :typing:

Not familiar with a "fill in the blank story". Is that anything like a rebus story?

I mean a story where the reader has to answer a few questions like this:

Something smelly:______
A famous person:______
A body part:________
A color:______
Favorite food:______
etc, etc

And then their answers are then filled into the text of the story, personalizing the tale.  IE: (Famous person) opened his picnic basket and pulled out a (color) (favorite food). "This smells like (something smelly)!  I can't eat this." Etc etc,

I've also seen it done as:

Your name:_____
An adjective:_____
A verb plus ing:_____
A noun:_____

Here's a website example--look under the one titled, 'Burp!'  http://www.eduplace.com/tales/

I don't think Highlights likes puzzles that encourage kids to write in the magazine. The Bluffton group might like something like that, though.

That's interesting.  Is that because they know that so many people share a single copy at the dentist's office?
