Illustrating / Re: Looking for Help
« Last post by K. Tag on March 04, 2019, 09:25 AM »
I've seen some of the illustrations that a few other SCBWI members have used for publication (hand-painted originals) and they vary in size. Some are sketchbooks size, while others are larger.

I've seen several exhibits of original illustrations from children's books (like Richard Scarry's bunny) and those weren't very large originally. But don't let that put you off. You work in what size you're comfortable in.

If a publisher wants you to create a series of images for a book they don't mind what media/size you work in, and they generally have special scanners for the original artwork.

When you're first starting out do your best work and if you work larger than a scanner, take photos or have a friend who's a professional take photos for you. You don't want a flash or a glare to wash out your work and you do need to have an online portfolio these days.

Contests and Challenges / PBParty is on March 19!
« Last post by Mindy Alyse Weiss on March 03, 2019, 10:06 PM »
I'm so excited to co-host PBParty along with Sharon and Michelle this year!

We have 11 amazing agents and 5 awesome editors lined up so far.
One editor is a secret Ninja...only requests will find out who this is. I will share that the editor is from a wonderful PAL publisher.

You can check out the agents and editors here: http://www.michelle4laughs.com/2019/03/2019-picture-book-party-agents-and.html

E-mail up to two submissions on March 19 at 4pm EST (the window will stay open for at least an hour). We have a sweet surprise for author/illustrators this year, so if you also illustrate, please don't forget to attach an illustration for your manuscript!

The top 20 (or so) entries will be posted on Michelle's blog for the agent/editor round on March 27 - 29.

If you're an unagented PB writer or author/illustrator, I hope you'll participate! And everyone is welcome to join the #PBParty Twitter party where we'll be celebrating picture books and sharing responses to fun questions. We've had some great ones suggested in the comments of our announcement post: http://www.michelle4laughs.com/2019/02/picture-book-party-2019.html

If you have any other suggestions, you can share it on the announcement post or here. And please feel free to ask me any questions.

Good luck, everyone! Sharon, Michelle and I can't wait to read your entries--and hope the agents and editors will find tons of gems.  :goodluckflower

Chapter Books & Easy Readers / Re: What has happened to chapter books?!
« Last post by Debbie Vilardi on March 02, 2019, 05:53 PM »
In my old library, chapter books were called "series books"

My library has them shelved as series books also. They are alphabetized by series title, not author name.

There are still new chapter book series being published that you can find at bookstores. And editors and art directors at conferences still talk about them, and writers and illustrators are still creating them, both young chapter books, and older chapter books (there is a difference in length and complexity).

In my old library, chapter books were called "series books" and were hard to find until I asked the librarian and learned they were not called chapter books.

I have seen MG books called chapter books in multiple places.

Might just be your library or that librarian? Or maybe they are shelved under a different name?
