Title: SciFi/ Fantasy magazines for kids?
Post by: JNilsson on June 04, 2008, 12:28 PM
I am having a difficult time finding any that are still in publication. It seems like they are almost a rare breed :cry2
Does anyone have a source to find them? I have checked the CWIM and have come up a little short.
Either print or online is fine...I would just love to find something, lol!

Thanks in advance :moose

I believe it used to be known as Beyond Centauri.

Crow Toe's Quarterly also takes (dark) fantasy.

What age children? I can think of a number of them suitable for YA and up.

They like it "playfully" dark, actually.

Actually, Beyond Centauri is still there. I've found that Spaceports and Spidersilk used to be KidVisions, which while it was KidVisions, I had several pieces (illo and writing) published. But I see that Lisa Bradley is no longer the editor, but have a COMPLETE overhaul :yup

:thanks2 so much for the info everyone.

Black Gate and Orson Scott Card's InterGalatic Medicine Show are for teens and up.   :duel

Here's a link to response times for SF and F magazine. You may find other suitable magazines and ezines on this list. :goodluck

I've actually been published in Beyond Centauri, and the editor there is very very nice.  I recommend him.  :)

I just found out about a new market for fantasy/sf.  It's a new kids magazine called Worlds to Discover.  The Kid Magazine Writers website included it in their markets section.  Here's the link:

I hope this helps! :love

I'm not sure I get their guidelines-- is their market just targeted towards African-Americans, or do the writers actually have to be African-American?

Turtle9, I'm not really sure either.  It doesn't appear as if it only accepts African American writers.  I think that it just wants stories geared toward African American kids.   You could always email the editor and ask for more information too.  I was thrilled :cheerleader when I saw this market since I love fantasy, and it's difficult to find children's magazines devoted to it! :cheerleader :cheerleader :cheerleader

Oh man, this is exactly what I need. I couldn't find anything in this area either!
The one I did manage to find (who rejected my short story) was called Andromeda Spaceways. They didn't seem to have a problem with YA fantasy, although I don't know if they go much younger than that. They're online, though, and you can track your sub on the site, which is kinda cool. (grin)

Hey Tracy_VB!  I'm replying here because I don't have enough posts to PM.  I don't know if Shiny ever accepts word counts under the GLs - my understanding is they run three stories an issue, so that might be a reason for the length requirement.  However, you could certainly shoot them an e-mail and ask - they're very nice!

Thanks, Tina!  I'm still revising the story, so the word count is creeping ever upward.  Who knows, it might end up at 2,000 after all!

 :thankyou Tracy
