Title: Pockets Fiction
Post by: CestMoi on February 13, 2012, 08:05 PM
Hello! I am a brand new member. I have two PB manuscripts in circulation, and I'm interested in breaking into magazine writing. I have a piece of fiction that I would like to submit to Pockets magazine, but I would like to research the magazine first to make sure it's a good fit. Unfortunately, I can't seem to locate copies anywhere. None of the local libraries carry it, and it seems their web site doesn't offer any fiction examples (only articles). Has anyone else run into this problem? Thanks!

Do you know someone who attends a Methodist church? Pockets is often available along with copies of Guideposts.

They have sample content on their webpage: http://pockets.upperroom.org/tag/practicing-gods-presence/ and http://upperroom.org/marketing/flipbooks/pocketsSAMPLER/index.html  but you've probably found those already. Lill is right -- you are likely to find it anywhere you find Guideposts.

Thanks, Lill and Auntybooks! I don't know anyone at a Methodist church, but that's a good suggestion. I found the sample content, but for some reason, none of it is fiction. I wish they post a few of their stories online. I may have to submit it without the research or find a different magazine.  :cry2

You can contact the magazine directly and ask for a sample copy.

Peggy King Anderson [http://www.peggyking.com/ ]  writes for them regularly. Maybe she has some samples up on her website. I'm not sure. She had a running serial for a couple of years. Maybe if you contact her, she may be able to get you sample copies from her own collection. You can offer to pay for postage.

Good luck.

Thanks, Vijaya! I'll definitely check out those two options!

Fwiw, I've found them in the magazine section of our local library.

Whoops!  Just noticed your mention of your local libraries not carrying it.  In that case, i wonder if magazines even qualify for inter-library loans...

You could call your local Methodist church, explain that you're a writer, and ask if they have any back issues ... offer to make a donation for them ... as these are generally paid for from church funds.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. It looks like I'll havquestedquest a review copy and/or contact a Methodist church. In our library system, magazines don't qualify for interlibrary loan. Vijaya, I checked out Peggy's site, but I didn't see any excerpts, unfortunately. She does mention a story that is on the Pockets web site, but they must have taken it down. Oh well . . . thanks again for all your suggestions, everyone!
