Title: How to Status Query Turtle Magazine
Post by: crookedbook on December 17, 2012, 07:38 AM
I submitted three poems to Turtle magazine on August 29, 2012 with a receipt confirmation postcard and SASE. I have not had any response, and I'm past the three month waiting period so I'd like to send a SQ. Should I (1) send a SQ via snail mail, or (2) call the number listed on their website for their editorial offices, or (3) email the address listed on their website for their editorial offices.

On a related note I also sent a poem to another US Kids magazine - Jack and Jill. It was mailed on November 2, 2012 and I received back my confirmation postcard that same month. I have not heard anything since.

Any advice is appreciated!

The U.S.Kids magazines ask that no one status query for three months, so the November submission is well within their stated response time. And since response times tend to be optimistic, the August isn't quite as late as one might think. Still, you can status query at this point for the August submission without jumping the gun. Generally a magazine prefers to be status queried in the same way as they are submitted to -- so if a magazine allows submissions via mail and email, you have a choice. When a magazine (like the U.S.Kids group) only allows mail submissions, then you really only have that option. Calling is almost always an extremely bad idea since whoever answers is highly unlikely to have access to information about where your submission is in the process.

now, I really must indulge in a small smilie
