Title: Cricket Mags now taking e-subs
Post by: Jayca on April 09, 2013, 04:42 PM

If this has already been posted somewhere, sorry...I looked briefly and didn't see it.

I was thrilled to find out that the Cricket Mags now accept (and prefer) email subs! Not only that, but they have a cool tracking system so that you can check on your submission at any time, so no more status queries or wondering if your sub got lost in the mail/spam!

The link wasn't easy (for me) to find, so I thought I'd post it here for all of my BB buddies: https://cricketmag.submittable.com/submit

Really appreciate your sharing this with us, Jayca!   :flowers2

I wonder if pieces submitted now online will be read sooner than pieces sent several months ago via regular mail. In the past, I've heard that if we don't hear a response in x months, we should just resubmit, not try to status query. How long do you think we should wait before resubmitting online?  Anybody any ideas about this?

Thanks, Jayca, for this information. It'll make submissions easier and checking the status of submission easy, too!

However, I hope it doesn't result in the Cricket mags getting overwhelmed with queries and submissions (especially inappropriate ones).

Love the online submissions!  It is hard to keep from checking status. Nothing in the "accepted" column yet, but nothing in the "rejected" either. There's always hope!  ::-) I think I check it almost as often as my son's online grades -though he does very well in school - it becomes habit to log in most days!

Best wishes to everyone!

Wow, I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to see this... how exciting! This removes that feeling of your story being out there in a big black void, no? And great magazines too. I still have all my issues of Babybug here in Chile. They're like mini books and my little one loves them.

Thanks, Jayca!

I subbed to the Bug mags through the online system in April.  I just checked my submission status and it went from "Received" to "In-Progress" today.  (I think I check it everyday!)  Nice to know something is happening. ::-)

Oooh, thanks for posting Sue! I also subbed in April and I just checked and mine went to 'in-progress' as well. I checked it earlier today and at that point it was still only 'received' so that's progress (and I don't check it that often...really!)

Fingers crossed.

I have two old Ladybug snail-mail subs that seem to be in limbo -- August and October 2012, I think. Not sure what to do about it, so nothing seems appropriate.

I have three in limbo--5/12, 9/12, and 12/12. I SQd in January on the 5/12 one, and received a reply at the end of May saying that the article was probably lost and to resub through the submittable site.

iyerani, the letter says they still accept print submissions, but they prefer online submissions.

Sara, I wonder if "lost" might mean "everything submitted before Submittable is in a pile in the corner but no one feels like looking at it because the web slushpile is so much easier."

And I think you're right, too, JodyJS. At the very least, I will always use Submittable in the future.

LOL! I'd bet on it!

I've heard back on two of the three things I submitted via Submittable.  I'm hoping there's a good reason why I haven't heard on the third. :)
Title: Re: Cricket Mags now taking e-subs
Post by: CarrieF on June 14, 2013, 01:12 PM
Anne Marie, when you heard back did they email you, or did you just notice a change of status in the system? I'm curious what communication will be like through this new system.

Also, I snail-mailed some things to Babybug and Spider on 2/19/13, just before they went to this new system. Now I think I should resubmit those...or is it better to wait until the 6-month mark?

FWIW, the 3 poems I have "in progress" right now with Ladybug were status queries on poems I submitted in April of 2012.
Title: Re: Cricket Mags now taking e-subs
Post by: dkshumaker on June 14, 2013, 06:18 PM
I also snail-mailed an article early in the year before the e-sub was available. . . . I've been debating, too, what I should do with it. It's been close to 6 months, so I may just re-sub via Submittable.

Thanks, Anne Marie. I guess there's no  need to obsessively check Submittable every day, then. I can just go back to my usual obsessive checking of email.

Stephen, you do have to set up an account through Submittable but you don't pay anything. The process was very easy.

Thanks again, Jayca, for sharing about the new online submissions process for these magazines.

I just got an acceptance letter (attached to an email) from Cricket magazine, for a poem I submitted a month or so ago. I had submitted via the link you provided.

A word of warning - the editor of Cricket said in her letter that they are eight to ten months behind on payments to their contributors. Judging from brief online research, I think this goes for all Carus magazines. Times are tough.

At least the editor was honest and up-front about this problem, though. Better forewarned than frustrated.

In September I received an email from Babybug stating that they wanted to buy one of my poems. The assistant editor also wrote "and I hope to have an opportunity to read more of your work." Great news! I was thrilled.

But now I am confused. I would like to submit more poetry to her - do I send it as a response directly to her email address? Or do I use the new online submission form?

Thanks!

Crooked,

I agree that I'd ask the editor what he/she wanted. For me, even though I've made some sales to ASK, I continue to use the Submittable form to submit proposals because that's what the editor requests. However, I never hear anything back through Submittable, just from the editor herself.

Good luck!

Sorry about the rejections, Siski and Schriscoe. My poem (submitted to Cricket in April) was also rejected yesterday. It was a personal note from Alive Letvin, so that helps a little, but it's still a rejection. We just have to stay positive and get our stuff back out there.

They must be whipping through the submissions. I just got a rejection yesterday on a Ladybug sub (through Submittable in April). Still two from April outstanding and one from June.

Sorry for the R's everyone. Maybe they are just hitting auto-reject   I still have one from June too with Spider so there is still hope. :crossedfingers

Congrats, CarrieF... sorry I missed the celebration for your poems earlier.

And sorry to for the rejections that all came in a flurry.  I'm still on tenterhooks with one myself. I'm almost afraid to pop my head up now.  :twitch

Think I'll sit here quietly and hope.  :pickme :pickme :pickme     (grin)

I got one too, for a poem subbed to Spider in July. But, I still have another in the running.

I know how you feel, Carrie Lee.
I didn't want to pop my head up, either, lol.
Waiting on an April poem sub.

Congrats Carrie F.

And poo on the R's.

This batch gave me an R on one sub -- PDQ! I subbed November 12. But the other one made it through the cull for now.

I finally heard from my snail-mail sub in April (right before I found out about submittable) to Babybug. Two poems no-  but one poem-  yes!

Yay for those of you who got your long-awaited "Yes!" and hugs for those with "not for us" letters. Not for us could still be right for someone else. Don't reject yourself--get those babies back in the mail.

After back-and-forthing for a while...and revising...and waiting...and waiting some more....had an email today with the official YES on a poem for Ladybug. This is the longest I've ever had to wait with them, but their editors (and their finished product) are so, so lovely, it's worth it:)  Original sub was June 2012.

Yay, Cindy and Jayca!! So exciting to get a yes on a poem.

They must be working through their heap. I got an R today, too, on a Cricket sub. (That's R for RATS!) Will take Bobi's advice and get it back in the mail.

Congrats, Jayca!!

Over the last few days, I've received about five R's from them, Carrie. Ironically, Babybug was my first magazine acceptance of any kind when I started writing for kids. And they accepted three poems at once! Those were the days. ;)

Hooray, Jayca!!   :goldstar   That's great news!

Hugs to you, Jody, Anne Marie, and Carrie. Hopefully, the next place you send them will be yeses.

Just want to share: I just received my first acceptance to Cricket!

The funny thing is, I subbed the story twice. First, by snail mail. After 8 months with no response, I subbed by Submittable. Four months later, I received a form R by snail on the original sub. I considered withdrawing the Submittable sub, but ended up deciding to leave it there. And today, 5 months after the 2nd sub, I got an email acceptance! (So glad I didn't withdraw after that first rejection!)

Congratulations, Sara! It really proves how subjective things are, and also that timing plays a big part in the process. Way to go!

I've subbed one ms to Ladybug 4 weeks ago.[ via Submittable]    Is it too soon to send them something else?

How many submissions to ANY of the 'bug' magazines do you submit?    One at a time?

Thanks for your insights and info on this.  =)

Congratulations, Sara!!  :partytime I'm happy dancing with you.

And yes, a similar thing happened to me several years ago. It's definitely a subjective business we're in.

Thanks, Ev!

And Liz, I usually have only one sub with each bug magazine at a time. So I might have one with Spider and one with Cricket, but not send another until I've heard on the first. Other people might do differently, though.

Yay, Sara! :talking:  I sent a poem to Babybug in November ("in progress") and a poem to Spider Feb. 10th ("received.")  I check Submittable every day, too! :neck
