Title: Picture Books with great back matter?
Post by: JodyJS on November 19, 2013, 04:31 AM
Hey, everyone,

I'm looking for suggestions of picture books with funny, really interesting, or unique treatments of their back matter. Recommendations?

Thanks!

Jody

I'll have to dig out some books to give you titles, but things I remember noticing include:

Illustrations/photos at the back that are magnified versions of what's in the main pages, along with 'other interesting info' type stuff.
Descriptions of each of the jazz musicians in THIS JAZZ MAN. This wasn't necessarily such a unique approach but it was very nicely done.
'Deleted scenes' ? like those blooper moments at the end of a movie ? I've seen this in a book but cannot for the life of me remember which. This would only work, I think, with creative non-fiction or straight fiction?

I'll have more after I've got our books out...

Thanks, Siski. I'll reserve This Jazz Man from the library.

In the picture book AN ISLAND GROWS, by Lola Schaefer, I enjoyed
the back matter info on how volcanic islands grow.

Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner
Back matter shares more details about the Subnivean world "word under the snow".

Great, darshana. I'll add that to my list.

Funny back matter would be great, too. For some reason, I'm thinking about a book about presidents that has funny back matter. Hmm.

Just read Laurie Halse Anderson's THANK YOU, SARAH today with first graders - and they wanted me to read every word of the back matter. I didn't. :) But it's a GREAT one.

Also, Brian Floca's LOCOMOTIVE has back matter (and endpaper-matter!) that's pretty awesome.

If I remember correctly, the Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins had a lot of factual back material.

SNOWFLAKE BENTLEY by Jacqueline Briggs Martin and illustrated by Mary Azarian is another that's perfect, especially for this season.

Okay, Laura. Thanks. It'll be fun to reread that anyway.

What is back matter?  Is it the last page or two that discusses facts about the book?  If so, Hurricane Wolf by Diane Paterson is about Noah and his parents preparing for a Hurricane in Florida.  After the story is some info that discusses Hurricanes as well as what a Category 1, Category 2 .... Category 5 are, all with a pictures of cats (ie: cat 2 has a picture of 2 cats) - something silly for kids.

Hope I'm on the right track and this helps.

You've got it, Laura! Back matter is the stuff at the back that gives more info about the subject of the book. I'll check out Hurricane Wolf! Thanks.

The Magic School Bus books all have humorous back matter.

Hmmm. Good point, Debbie! And I've got a million of those around the house.

By the way, I'm enjoying reading or rereading the books already suggested here. Thanks, everyone.

The Kite that Bridged Two Nations: Homan Walsh and the First Niagara Suspension Bridge by Alexis O'Neill has three pages of interesting historical back matter.
