on my profile bit, i don't seem to have the option to put in a url.

am i being dense?

i've got the check box 'personalised picture', with choices for actor/musician etc.
i've got the check box for 'upload own image', with a 'find file' button.

but nowhere to put a url!

help?

i'm tempted to put my pic in my sig, because it's the only spot i can find to paste my url.....

Hi, Redbear, and welcome!

Did you upload the picture you want to use onto your own computer? To do that, right-click on it and Save As Image (give it a name). Save it somewhere you will remember, like on your Desktop.

Then get into your Profile here. You probably have to give your secret password in order to change your profile.

In the Edit Profile window:
- Make sure Personalized Picture is UNchecked.
- I will upload my own picture----> CHECK  this.
- Use Browse to find the name of the picture on your computer. When the name appears in Browse, highlight it and click on Open.

- Down at the bottom, click on Change Profile.

Go to Home to see whether it worked. If it worked, you will have the right picture at the top beside User Info and Hey Redbear, you have 200 messages.

i did do this after i realised there was nowhere to put the url. but the transparency kept not working on the gif.

you see, i have a Gif file illustration uploaded onto my web space, that i use for all the forums i'm a member of, instead of uploading it seperately for each forum, i use the url to 'point' to the illustration.

after i tried uploading the gif to here and it kept going wrong (that is, what should have been transparent, turned black) i found this thread, and then i proceeded to get a bit confused.

i'll have another bash....

Help!  I've done this about five times and it's not working.  I can't change the picture or the comment at the bottom of my picture.  I thought I could just stick the new url (under browse) and change my inspiration to something else and click edit profile.  What am I doing wrong?

Okay, I figured it out.  The picture I was trying to download was too high resolution.  I think.  Because I clicked on a couple of lower resolution ones and I had no problem.

Vijaya, I just wanted to so thanks for the hint about high resolution pictures.  I couldn't get my picture to load until I found a low resolution image.  I know you posted this a year ago so you may never read this, but thanks anyway!

You're welcome, Tri.  I just tried to put on a new picture and came over here ... problem: high resolution.  Need to find some low ones.  Sheesh, won't I ever learn?

This is getting frustrating.  All the pictures that I WANT to put on have too high resolution ... the search continues.

You can convert them down to a smaller size first and then attach them. Do you have some sort of photo editing program?

I do, I do!  Okay, so the trick is to get it saved in another format (lower res.)... and then upload it here, is that correct?

Okay, I'm not usually this dim, but I can't seem to get a url for a gif in my profile.  It will not let me delete what I already have unless I check the top box and take a canned pic.  I cannot get it to take a url.  I have one that is animated, and I would love to put it in my profile, but I can't seem to figure it out.   :EmoticonHelp2:   :mad4:

Check out Jaina's first post on this thread. I think she explains how to do the animated one there.

That's the first thing I read, and I tried to do that, but when I try to copy the url into the space that says "upload my own pic", I can't do it.  It will only let me choose from pictures on my own hard drive and upload.  When I try to delete the image I already have, I get the clunk sound and nothing happens.  :banghead:

It must be some, small step that I'm missing somewhere.  But I have tried to follow Jaina's directions as they are written

Ok, the problem is, I can do the upload thing when I save it as an image.  BUT, what I would LIKE to do is have the animation work.  A few people have linked to their animated gifs.  If I just download the image to my computer and then upload it to my profile, I just have a static image.  Sorry if I sound grumpy.  It's just so frustrating.  Thanks for everyone's input. :yup

You don't download the gif to your computer first.  You have to link to the original page.

Thanks Anne Marie--but that's the problem.  It won't let me link.  There is no place to put in the link, because it only lets me "upload".  I can't paste in or type in anything.   :-[

Right above the upload spot, there should be a choice that says "I have my own pic/specify by URL."  You don't have that?

I download the gifs to my hard drive and then upload them here. I go to Edit Profile and it has a spot to choose a picture or to Upload my own picture. I click on Upload and it says Choose file and that pulls the gif straight from my harddrive, and they animate just fine. Doesn't work on lj, but works here. I'll put up a new one just to make sure I'm not nuts (nutsier).

There I should have an animated tree instead of the snowman now. I'll change it back later.

When I look at your profile it's there.  Send me the URL via pm and I'll see if I can put it in for you.

I don't understand. I just changed mine again. I went and downloaded a gif I never had before. Saved it on my hard-drive, came in, uploaded it and it animates.

Difference in computers..I don't know...I don't even have the "url" thing anymore..it specifically says "upload" on my screen. I "used" to have the url thing.

Has stumped me.

Hmmm..try a different animated gif..and see if maybe it's just a glitch with the gif.
