About the Graphic Novels Board

Discussion started on

Hi!  Welcome to the graphic novels section.  This is the place to discuss writing and illustrating graphic novels for the 17 and under crowd.

Q:  What is a graphic novel?

"A graphic novel is a type of comic book, usually with a length and complex storyline similar to those of novels. [...] It suggest a story that has a beginning, middle and end, as opposed to an ongoing series with continuing characters, one that is outside the genres commonly associated with comic books.  [...] In publishing trade, the term is sometimes extended to material that would not be considered a novel if produced in another medium.  [...] Whether manga, which has had a much longer history of both novel-like publishing and production of comics for adult audiences, should be included in the term is not always agreed upon."
- Wikipedia on Graphic Novels (ETA on 4/6/16: This quote was from 2008; the Wikipedia link now brings you to a modified post.)

Please click the wikipedia link for further reading on the definition and history of graphic novels.  With the varying/flexible definitions of what constitutes a graphic novel, one's personal definition might differ from someone else's and that's fine.  But with this in mind, we request that the graphic novels you discuss, link to and review in this forum are suitable for the teen crowd.  Thanks!

Q:  Is there a list of graphic novels for teens that I can refer to somewhere?

Yes!  YALSA just so happens to have a list of Great Graphic Novels for Teens that you can find here:

Other lists that might be of interest:

The Children's & YA Bloggers' Literary Awards (Cybils)

If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask an admin/mod.

Enjoy your new forum!
