I'll be presenting a workshop about writing for magazines and would like to include a little information about illustrating for them.  Any comments or advice I can pass on would be appreciated, since I have absolutely no experience with illustrating.  Also, can you tell me if magazine illustration gave you entry into the picture book market?
Thanks for your help.

In my experience illustrating for magazines, I have received a copy of the text to be illustrated and some art direction from the editor. I've been lucky in most of the images I send pencils for there are few changes requested, but every once in a while a story gets changed and the image has to be revisited from scratch.

I illustrate books and magazines in tandem, so for me it's kind of like the chicken and the egg paradigm.
