SCBWI's Blueboard - A Message & Chat Board

Two Qs for 4, 5, and 6 year olds

Discussion started on

If you have a 4, 5, or 6 year old, will you ask them two questions for me?

What is your favorite sound?
What is your favorite smell?

Thank you! And please give them thank you hugs from me (or let them play with the smilies).

Katy,
Not sure this is really going to help, but here goes. I asked my four (almost five) year-old and her first answer was "I don't know" (included here for authenticity). When pressed, her favorite sound is cows (??? we live in Texas and were out in the country yesterday) and favorite smell is baking (cookies).

My 3.5 year old's answers are perhaps more interesting than helpful, but here goes:

What is your favorite sound? elephant sounds
What is your favorite smell? orange juice

This is too funny! I worked with this age group for 27 years, and often they give anwers that reflects what they just saw or did. When I asked questions during circle time, I would watch some of the children look all around the room for the answer. It didn't matter if we were talking about the swimming pool or going to the moon...I knew that someone would gaze around the room to find the answer.  :lol4

My almost 5 yr old said her favorite sound is a dog barking. First, she listed a bunch of animals (a cow, a cat, a dinosaur, a tiger) and then settled on the dog.

Oh, wait...she just gave me a new sound she likes--fireworks.

Her favorite smells: cookies and roses.

These are great! Keep 'em coming.

This is what I wanted--fresh from the minds of this age group--sometimes off the wall answers. Perfect!

Five year old girl. Smell: peppermint. Sound: splashing.

I was surprised by both of these, but she didn't have to think long to come up with either!

PS Audrey, I thought my five-year-old would also use room cues as she was looking around the room but I couldn't figure out where her answers came from. She'd just eaten garlic chicken, though, so maybe she was thinking she needs some peppermint for her breath?! He he he.

My five year old boy answered:
My favorite smell is cinammon sugar.
My favorite sound is my bootie farting.

Sorry. Those are the real answers...

Wow--cookies seem to rule the smell category! :-)

Robin--no worries. At least he's honest. :-)

And Whizbee, I love that your child's fav sound is quiet. I agree. And I love that the smell question prompted additional dialogue. I love kids!

From my 6-year-old grandson:

Sound - dog barking (His dog was barking in the background.)
Smell - Mom cooking

This is very interesting. I hadn't realized a child this age would pull his "favorite" from his immediate surroundings.

Some of these are so sweet! "Mommy's voice"?! Ahhhhh.

I also LOVE 'bootie farting' because kids can be soft, sweet and ever so lovely but they're also wonderful when they're downright hilarious! Yesterday as I was carrying my daughter in my arms (facing me) she gazed at me so sweetly, smiled in a secretive way and said, "Mummy, can you tell that I'm farting on your hand?" I should have dropped her on the spot!! Cheeky monkey.

My five year old says her favorite sound is "baby" and her fav smell is "a flower".
My one-week-away-from-four year old says her favorite sound is "goo goo ga ga" and her favorite smell is "the smell of candy".

My girls were playing with baby dolls when I asked, so that probably influenced their sound answer, but there is no candy or flowers around. I think they could more easily search for a favorite smell than they could for a favorite sound.

Sue G.! Thank you for taking the time to do this. And I'm glad it prompted a writing session.

The smell of turnips cracked me up! :-)

And 24 hatching chicks? I'll bet you're an awesome teacher!
