Hi there BBers!

I'm looking for titles of picture books that contain sections or, for lack of a better word, chapters. But not really progressive chapters that feature the same characters as they move through one story. More like related short stories within a greater framework. But not a great big compilation of full length stories. Ugh. I'm probably not making sense. Help!

The only one I can think of is Mo Willems' "Hooray for Amanda and Her Alligator" which contains 6 (and a half) short little stories about friendship, and "The Stinky Cheese Man" by Jon Scieszka which contains a jumble of fairy tales.

I'm thinking of breaking some rules (Wheee!) on word count and format and would love to see how the pros do it.

 :thankyou

My first thought was Pierre by Maurice Sendak. Probably not what you mean...

I don't know Stinky Cheese Man (well, I've heard of it but it's not my sort of thing) but I think Amanda and Her Alligator is approaching the linked short-story format that you see in early readers like Ling and Ting: Not Exactly Alike or the Fox Sisters.

Another of Willems' books that might fill the bill is CITY DOG, COUNTRY FROG. It's a beautiful collaboration with illustrator Jon Muth, and very atypical for Willems. It's not so much divided into chapters as it is four sections, one for each season.

There's also Laura Vaccaro Seeger's DOG AND BEAR: TWO FRIENDS, THREE STORIES. It is pretty low word-count, but it's broken down into chapter-like sections.

Rules were meant to be broken, right? :)  Some great examples listed here to guide you along the way. Love THE STINKY CHEESE MAN!

I can only think of illustrated poetry picture books, like Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich and Stella Unleashed. I hope this helps!
