I just got my contributor copies from my first published children's story. It's in the Jan. issue of Pockets :yay

My question is: I got 5 contributor copies. How many of those do I need to save for myself? When do you need copies of past work? Or is it just a courtesy so you can pass them out for friends and family?

I don't want to give them away, and then regret it later, but I'm coming up blank on what I'd need more than 1-2 for.

I'm still very new to children's publishing!

asingrey,

Congratulations! I love Pockets. :)

As to your question, I usually keep one contributor copy for future market research and tear out my story from another copy to put in my portfolio. If I get more than two copies, I usually give them to family/friends or donate to the library.

I always keep two copies in case something happens to one. One is in a file, the other is on my bookshelf. I use scanned versions to send as clips. Extra copies can be donated or given to friends. I always assumed the magazine wants us to give them away in hopes that they will get a new subscription from one of our friends.

Thanks, everyone! That's good to know. I'll give three of them away, then. :)

As others have said I keep two. One thing to keep in mind as your career grows is that you may want copies to show if you start giving writing workshops. I recently spoke to a writing group and wished I had kept more copies of my magazines to pass around as I discussed breaking in to the children's market with a group of adult writers.
