I was sad to see that Highlights will not have a fiction contest in 2016. It was on the page where they announced the contest winners this year.

It's too bad - it was always such a good motivator for me. Does anyone know why this decision was made? Just curious...

I know! I was sad about that too.

I don't know why the decision was made. My guess is that the added workload was too much.

But I hope they have another in the future!

I also found it to be a great motivator and just plain fun.

I agree, Diana, it was fun! I hope they start it up again someday, or something similar.

Yes, I think it's sad that Highlights will not have a contest in 2016, too.  And my writing was coming together much much better so I looked forward to entering it this year.  So I entered the Pockets contest for this year which I think is a nice contest too.  Been reading blogs but haven't read why there's no contest, and hope they do have some sort of contest in the future.  Happy Writing CarrieF, DianaM and AmaT

A major point of the contest for them was always to fill gaps in their files--for example, if they didn't have many holiday stories, they'd have a holiday theme.  Since they build their issues from their files, they need to have a variety of manuscripts on hand to fit different times of the year and a variety of genres.  And I'm sure it's a huge workload for the entire staff to hold the contest.  My guess is that they don't need to have the contest in order to fill their needs, so it's not worth it.

I don't have insider info; that's just my assumption.

That's a good point, Anne Marie. Maybe they'll start it up again if and when they see a need in a particular area.

Has anyone received their 2015 entry back from Highlights?  I haven't, yet.  May have forgotten to send an envelope, but I'm hoping they're considering purchasing it.  They do that, sometimes...

I got mine back a couple of weeks ago. Could be they're considering it! Good luck!

Aw, man, that is a bummer.  I have never yet gotten my act together in time to enter it, but it's a huge opportunity, so sad to see it go.
