Is this something someone would/could say in your area? Is it too old-fashioned for a Picture Book? Would you know of a similar phrase that means the same thing (exclamation indicating surprise) that scans the same? I thought of OMG but that isn't really universally accepted or acceptable, but it may give you an indication of the sort of thing I'm after, if My oh my is not current.
Thanks a lot!

Yowsa! Yikes! Whoa! Cool! Cool beans! Sweet! Far out! I tend to use plain old "Wow!" a lot. If you like OMG, no reason not to use it. (But maybe not in a pb.) Or you could say "Omigosh!"

Or, depending on context: "Get out of here!" "Hogwash!"
"No way!" "Surely you jest!" If it's an older person: "Horsefeathers!"

My, oh my! feels old fashioned to me. I could believe a character saying it if she was the grandma.

You hear "Holy Wah!" here, but that's a regionalism (Upper Peninsula). Maybe "Holy cow!" or "Unbelievable!" or "No way!"

Good luck!

I agree with dews. My, oh my! would be very good from the voice of a grandmother, but probably not a younger person.

There's always holy moley, but anything with "holy" in it would probably need to be changed.

A lot would depend on your voice and character. Like others have said 'my, oh my' sounds like an older person, but maybe that's who is speaking. Kidding around, I used to always say 'my my, sweet potato pie' in a heavy southern accent (but ONLY in front of my kids who would have been mortified to hear it outside our home). I like yikes and wow for picture books.

I have "my oh my" in a PB which is currently on submission from my agent. But it's a rhyming/rope-skipping sort of verse.

Variations of wow might work. Think wowza or zowee.  No one says you can't make up an exclamation if you need to.
