If not, what's something that's not too slangy? Just a word today's teens would know.
 :thankyou

My child is two, so I am not sure about current teen usage. But what if your characters made up a name for the group? My friends spent our high school years referring to the more socially prestigious group of kids as "the herd."

My 11YO going into 6th grade says she knows the word, if that helps.

Around here, teens say social group. (I know; it sounds stuffy, but :shrug )

My kids know the term (14, 13, 11, 10) and it's a negative connotation. They refer to their own group of friends as a "squad." But they talk about cliques.

My teenaged kids are like Jen's and use it in a negative manner.
Holly, I like the idea of making up a name. That's so typical for MG kids and their clubs. I can totally picture a nerd herd :grin3

I just asked a room full of five kids ages 11 to 17, all boys, and not one of them knew the word. I explained it and asked what they would say and they said, "Groups." I know, not very creative, but there you have it.

My kids, 18 and 16, say "friends" or "squad" or "tribe."

Thanks, everyone! The MC is using the term in a negative way, so clique would work. I appreciate the other terms too, for future reference, and I also like the idea of a made up word, as HD suggested. In fact, I may borrow "herd" for this situation.  :moose

 :thanx again!
