Hey Jules:

If you are still looking for more books, please check out anything by Janet McDonald. Most of characters are sassy and funny and their stories show readers that you can beat the odds. Unfortunately, Janet passed away last week. We shared the same agent and I will miss her terribly. Her newest book, "Off Color" will be coming out in October with FSG. I feel bad that I didn't think of her before when I first gave you some book titles. Check out her website, www.projectgirl.com for more information on her books.

I was going to mention Spellbound by Janet McDonald.  I enjoyed it.  I found the shifting POV a might bothersome, but the story was fun and uplifting.

Bud, Not Buddy is wonderful!  I'd read anything by Christopher Paul Curtis.

I just noticed two PB editions of an old favorite in the book store: THE EGYPT GAME (MG novel). The cover art shows the kids, who are of various ethnicities.
This is not an issue book or a "downer," but a neat suspense story that's also about making friends.

Someone else already mentioned it but I second the Jackson Jones series by Quattlebaum.
