 :welcome

It is the policy of this message board to be a safe, friendly place for writers and illustrators of children's literature to share information.  The management team of this message board reserves the right to edit, alter, or delete any messages that we feel are not in accordance with this policy. No message is ever removed or changed without extensive consultation of the management team of this board unless it is blatantly inappropriate or breaks the basic rules of no flaming, swearing, religious or political content or is otherwise inappropriate for this message board.

Membership on this board is a privilege, not a right! Anyone who posts caring, responsible messages on this board is welcome.  :hearts Our main goal here is to "play nice" with each other by friendly (albeit sometimes heated) discussions of issues. It's fine to disagree -- just be sure your posts are disagreeing with the issues and not the personalities of the posters of the issues.

Basic Rules of this Board and some of the most frequently asked questions and their answers.

The main rules of this board are: No Flaming, No swearing, Play Fair, Play Nice, Discuss Issues Not People, No Political or Religous Discussions and No Solicitation or Advertising of a Business unless you have at least 100 qualifying posts AND have gotten permission to post your message/s with one of the Administrators of this board, and No Solicitation of Submissions from Publishers/Editors who haven't been in business more than two years with a proven track record.  NOTE:  These rules are very strictly enforced.  It's the aim of this board and all who run it to keep it a safe and pleasant place for everyone.

1)  Why can't I register more than once?

When you try to register more than once, you cause a lot of unnecessary work for the administrators.  Please, folks, do not register more than once!  If we notice you are trying to register a second time under a different name, you will not be approved. If you want to change your nickname on the board, it can be done in your profile. Go to Account Related Settings and change the Name People Will See On The Board. Ask an administrator to help you if you need to change your "real" name (the one no one sees unless a full member should go into your profile.) That way, you won't be denied registration on the board with your new nickname.

2)  Why am I limited to having only one Nick on this board?

Refer to Question #1.  Also, it is to eliminate people having a second nick posting in the same thread... as if they were two different people talking. (Many of us have nightmares remembering some of the flame wars we've seen on other message boards when people signed on under different nicks and flamed THEMSELVES back and forth and got everyone all riled up -- just for "fun!")

3)  I'm new. I'm having problems hiding my email and profile. Please help me.

If you have clicked the Hide Email Address box in your profile on the Account Related Settings page, your e-mail is hidden to everyone except the Administrators, the Moderators, and yourself. You can see it in your posts and when you look at your profile but none of the regular posters or people reading the board can see it. If the box is checked, it's hidden.  Your profile is always hidden from everyone except Full Members, and the people running this board. (See Question #9)

4)  Why was my post deleted?

Posts are deleted when the Administrators and Moderators of this board cannot allow them to stay on the board because they conflict with the main policies (No Flaming, No swearing, Play Fair, Play Nice, Discuss Issues Not People, No Political or Religous Discussions) of this board.  Duplicate posts will also be deleted without any warning. The board is already very large.  Duplicate posts by many people would make it totally unmanageable. Posting once in the right place on the board is all that is necessary.

5)  Why was my post in response times deleted? It's not breaking any of the stated rules of the board.

Response Times boards are for nothing except response times.  No exceptions.  If your post was deleted, either it did not contain a response time or it also had other information or discussions in it.  Discussions and other information belong on the Market/Agent News & Discussion board. In order to make it easy for people to see the response times, these boards are very strictly monitored!

Timesaver Tip: Alphabetize Response Times boards by clicking on the word SUBJECT in the header across the top of the board. It will alphabetize all posts on that board except the "sticky" posts at the very top of the list.

6)  I know the rules say not to post political/religious opinions or to talk negatively about people on this board, but this is just an innocent question....

" :hairpull <---- Moderators ----> :gaah  WHY do people think they can slam people on this board? WHY?  :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :gaah :slap"

This is the reaction of your Moderators whenever they see someone slamming a person on the board (whether or not they are a writer doesn't matter).  Don't do this to them, folks.  Think before posting anyone's name.  Praising someone is fine, but we don't want people going away feeling bad about something they read about themselves here!"

7)  Why can't I post an editor or agent's contact information?

This information can only be personally posted by an editor or agent.  It's not acceptable to publicly post this private contact information about an editor or agent on a board that gets as many hits each month as this one does (average hits per month right now is between 500,000 and 600,000 and it has even had as many as one million hits per month!)

8 )  My post count never changes. Why?

The posts that "count" are the ones that allow your personality to show through and that are considered "contributing" posts.  These are posts that add to the informational value of the board through thoughtful questions and/or answers.  This doesn't mean we want to discourage other posts... it's just that there are so many people on the board, and every person has to be personally "evaluated" by one of the administrators.  Using this criteria as a basis for the number of posts that "count" makes the administrators jobs much easier when they are doing their regular evaluation checks on the members of this board.

9)  Why can't I PM (send anyone a private message)?

The "No PM" policy for newer members has been in effect for several years now, ever since we had a terrible rash of absolutely horrible pornographic spam on and through the board.  Someone signed onto our board, got into everyone's profiles and a vast majority of the people on the board started receiving extremely disgusting XXX-rated pornographic photos via email. (Some were posted on the board, too.)

In order to avoid that problem from occurring again, we changed the board features so that only the people who have been here for a long time and have shown themselves responsible through many caring, sharing posts could get into other member's profiles, which automatically meant they were the only ones who could send PM's to other members on the board, too.  Since that policy went into effect, we have had no more problems with "drive-by spammers" having access to this board's members' profiles and sending pornographic photos and/or massive spam mailings to anyone on this board.

If someone sends a PM to you and you want to reply, do it in an open message on the board.  Be sure to tell the person you want to respond to the PM they sent you, but you don't have that privilege yet and ask them to send another PM giving you their email in it so you can reply to them.  (And folks, if you are sending a private message to someone who isn't yet a full member be sure to include your email so they don't get frustrated!)

10)  The smileys are driving me crazy!  Is there a way to turn them off?

Sure!  It's easy.  Just go into your profile and open the Look and Layout Preferences.   Change the Current Smiley Set to No Smileys and enjoy your smiley-free board.

11)  Why was my account deleted?

If you signed onto this Board but have not visited in 90 days or more, (regardless of how many times you have posted), your registration has most likely been eliminated from the boards and you will need to sign up again if you wish to have the advantages of being a registered member. We are sorry for any inconvenience, but it's our goal to keep this board up-to-date with current, active members.  (You don't need to post to be considered active, just visit the board and log on at least once every couple of months.)

12)  This board is HUGE!  How can I find something on it without spending hundreds of hours hunting through all the messages? Can someone tell me X?  Where can I find Y?  How about Z?

We've had a lot of thoughtful discussions over the years.  With over 150,000 posts on the boards, it's highly likely that your question has been asked before.  Before starting a new topic, use the search box at the top of the board to see if your question has already been addressed.  There's a lot of wisdom in these pages; it's there for the taking -- you just need to find it.  Read Anne Marie's posts for tips on how to search the forums.

13) Why was a word in my post censored?  One of the big reasons certain words are censored is because part of the board is public AND searchable by school children. Think of us as daytime network television vs. HBO.  The censoring of these words is automatic and the editing is not done by an administrator or moderator.
