I've had a Twitter for almost a year (I think), but I'm kind of puzzled by it still. Like someone said above, I feel like I'm talking to myself, too! In fact, I didn't even know that someone had replied to a couple of my tweets months ago until I installed TwitterFon and saw them. :feelbad Now I know a bit better. ;-)

Also, I'm kind of still wondering if there is any use for an unpublished writer to tweet... I think Twitter is an awesome tool for published writers and anyone else who has a fanbase, but for an unknown person like me, not so sure... :eh2 It is fun, though, and I love following some of my favorite musicians. :-) Please, feel free to follow me, and I'll follow you right back!

Sometimes I wonder the same thing, Topaz! But I've decided to use to connect with other writers for the most part. I have a couple friends and relatives that I follow, but my main goal is to increase my circle of writing friends. It's kind of like a Blueboard express for me - it's nice to know that other people are increasing their word counts, struggling with revisions, even celebrating good news and that kind of thing. And I'm also getting to know a little more about the non-writing sides of their lives (as much as one can in 140 characters) -- what they care about, what they find funny, annoying, etc.  It's kind of like facebook, but without all the clutter.
What's your twitter name? Let me know and I'll find you. (Mine is CreativeDrought. Not a ringing endorsement, I know....) :)

I've fallen out of love with twitter this past month, but it's mostly because it's become overwhelming. I know I can't possibly keep up with all the updates, so I don't even bother. I don't even post much anymore. I'm at a crossroads right now -- I'll either quit completely and move on, or I'll unfollow 3/4 of the people. But how am I supposed to choose? grr. I wish I had the time to do it all. I really do.

Kwyn, my Twitter is here! Off to find yours! :-)

Sbk, Twitter definitely can take a lot of time. Best of luck in your decision!

I've only been using Twitter for a week or so, but I've been bummed to see how many Twitter stalkers are out there: porn tweeters and, in my case, realtors. Guess that's what I get for having a place name as part of my Twitter ID!

Laurie, if you're getting a lot of that, you could set your profile to private so that you have to approve people who want to follow you, kind of like a Facebook friend request. I've been checking my followers now and then to delete anyone I don't want on my follow list.

A possibly very silly question, but I have to ask... What are the rules of retweeting? I've seen several book-related tweets I would have liked to retweet, but they came from people who aren't on my friend list and were just retweeted by others. Is it okay to retweet if the original tweeter isn't on your friend list? Or should you add the original tweeter first? :duh

You don't have to add them, but if you're reposting it's polite to RT them. Just put RT@(person's ID that posted it) and the quote or link.  :tinkerbellheart

For all you American history buffs, John Quincy Adams (yes, that one) is now on Twitter, courtesy of the Massachusetts Historical Society! And if you follow him and play nice, he might follow you back! How cool is that!

The Beeb reported that Twitter was offline due to a denial-of-service attack. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8188201.stm
(Although, you know, it just might be all those JQAdams fans trying to follow him..!)

I've joined the Tweet Train, but have no idea what I'm doing.  So, if you can figure out how to follow me, then I'll figure out how to follow you.  Deal?
I'm elissacruz there as well.  Sorry, not sure how to link to it just yet.

(I've been reading this thread.  RT?  Updates?  Boy, I've got a lot to learn.)

Elissa, I searched for you on Twitter but didn't find you there. Maybe it's because the account is new and it takes a little time to show up. But you can post a link to your page just like you would any other website; just copy and paste the link here, like www.twitter.com/lynnekelly.

RT stands for "re-tweet," and it means that you're re-posting a comment that someone else made. Like if someone wrote, "Congrats on your book deal, @elissacruz!" and I wanted to re-tweet that for my followers to see, I would type "RT @username (whoever that original person was) Congrats on your book deal, @elissacruz!" An update is just whatever comment you type, kind of like a status update on Facebook.

To follow someone, just search for their name and click the "follow" button on their page. If you install Tweetdeck on your computer it makes it a lot easier to do everything. Just google "tweetdeck" to find where you can go to download it.

lynnek,  THANK YOU!  Okay, so here's my official twitter page:  http://twitter.com/elissacruz

And I will get to work finding Tweetdeck and figuring this out.  Anyone know much about Facebook, btw?  Been struggling with figuring that one out for months!  :eh2

I'm pretty sure there are a couple of very helpful Facebook threads in this section of the boards, including how to keep some info private. Rummage around and I'm sure you'll find them!

Followed several of you on this page (I'm chattyanna)! Twitter's giving me trouble, though, so I hope everything went through.

Now, another silly question. Do you peeps follow agents (or editors)? I've followed a few, but somehow I feel like an intruder (as in, here I am, a lowly unpubbed writer stalking you)...or am I just bonkers?  :duh

I've been reading the boards for a few days, but for the most part have been scared to post, so I figure this is as good a place as any to jump in.

I am a twitter-holic. You can follow me at:

http://twitter.com/jamieharrington

the writer friends I have made on twitter are invaluable! If you don't tweet I suggest you start. It seems like a lot of the publishing industry is doing it, and it's a great way to get your name out there!

I follow whomever looks interesting (agents/editors/authors/funny people). It's a bit different from facebook because you're not intruding on pictures or other personal stuff. I think that's the point. People on twitter usually *want* to be followed unless they make their profile private. And I figure if they don't want me following them, they'll block me.  :banghead

I also try to retweet my twitter friends' news of new books, good reviews, contests etc. That's the great thing about twitter--networking--I also get so many great book recs, it's hard to keep up!

I'm a lot more cautious, friending agents/editors on facebook. I usually wait for an invitation, unless it's my own editor or someone I know well.
