I joined Twitter a few months ago and, while sometimes I need breaks from it, I do like being able to follow agents or other writers and gradually broaden my circle. I also find it handy for keeping in contact with people who don't blog that much. My twitter is here: http://www.twitter.com/hcor. I'm going to go back through the pages and add people. :)

It's a micro-blogging site.  Your posts can be no more than 140 characters.  You network and follow people--other sites call it "friending," but on Twitter it's not mutual.  Many readers and writers follow each other on it.

Okay, I know I'm a total dodo but could you guys please help me.  :duh  I'm trying to sign up for Twitter and supposedly now have an account.

I made a mistake when they asked if I wanted to follow those 20 people they suggest to you.  I didn't realize I had to uncheck them.  I stupidly clicked "Next" and now I'm following 20 people I have absolutely no desire to follow.  Please tell me how to unfollow them.  I checked Twitter's FAQ and they said if I went to my page of followers there would be a drop down menu that allowed me to unfollow someone.  But I've looked and looked and I can't find any drop down options.

Also--did you give them the password to your email when they asked?  I don't want to do that and I don't see why they need it.  Will I not be able to function on Twitter if I don't give it to them?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!!!! :thanks
Ev

Ev,

I just checked on my Twitter and here's how it went: Click on "following" to get to the page of people you are following. On the right corner of the box of each person you follow there is a little gear symbol. If you click on that a box drops down with an unfollow option.

If that doesn't work for you, you can go to each persons actual page and remove them from there.

And I did give Twitter an email address when I set it up. When I get a DM(direct message) it emails me, which has worked out well. I could definitely function without it though.

Hope that helps!

Heather

Thanks, Heather! That definitely helped and your instructions worked just fine. :thankyou  You're my hero!  As soon as I figure the rest of this all out I'll start following you.

I gave them my email address.  I don't mind that.  I just didn't want to give them my password to my email account.  I couldn't see any reason they'd need that.

Congrats on your upcoming book.  It looks like it's a cute one.

A hero! Ha! I'm glad that I was able to help. I'm thinking they want your email and password so they can read your email list and show you who in your address book is on Twitter. I seem to recall doing that. I suppose I should be more suspicious of things like that.
I'd follow you but I don't know what your handle is. I'm @heatherayris. Let me know if you need any help with anything and I'll try to help out. I seem to like twitter a bit too much. Thanks for saying nice things about my book too. :moose

blythe, people will tell you Follow Friday is a way to recommend especially good Tweeters to your own followers - and it IS good for that - but its real purpose is to tweet me (that's www.twitter.com/mike_jung), include #mikesempire in your tweet, and by doing so be awarded a silly Mike's Empire title. Ask marybethb, I believe she has a #mikesempire tattoo. FOR WHICH I AWARDED HER A SECOND TITLE

I've been on Twitter for ages. Gave up for a while because it was becoming a time-suck, then went back to it. It's addictive!

Even while sick with the Cold From Hell (tm) I can communicate from my sick bed (couch) in 140 characters. What's not to love?! :)

Followed several of you on this page (I'm chattyanna)! Twitter's giving me trouble, though, so I hope everything went through.

Now, another silly question. Do you peeps follow agents (or editors)? I've followed a few, but somehow I feel like an intruder (as in, here I am, a lowly unpubbed writer stalking you)...or am I just bonkers?  :duh

I joined Twitter after agents Michael Bourret and Michael Sterns recommended it at the agent panel at SCBWI last year. At first I felt weird, like I was listening in. But since they were the ones who suggested it, I held on and followed many other agents and editors. They know writers are there. Some will even put questions out to writers asking for advice on blog posts or workshop topics writers would be interested in. Some even go as far as putting out requests for manuscripts they'd like to see submitted or query writing advice. Either way, I say don't be afraid. Twitter is a networking tool. And if someone doesn't want you to follow them, they'll block you.

Twitter has a new feature, similar to what FB has, where you can list those you follow. Anyone tried it? It's pretty funny, because you can choose to show your lists which means everyone can see who they're on a list with & how many times they're listed (what a way to feed the egos of others!). It's nice, too, because sometimes you want to keep track of certain agents or editors because they give such great advice and you can access their tweets really fast. I'm not sure if everyone can access it yet, so don't get mad if you don't have it! It doesn't work very well and takes forever to make a list, but I think that's why they're testing it on some people.
