Topaz, I'm not sure. I was able to get my photo program to resize it though, and now it works. I'm still not sure about twitter though. Too  many ways to waste time on the internet when I should be writing.

Okay, I think I've figured it out.

I'm under my full name although it shows without the last two letters.

I added on a few people but still don't know if this is something different than the friends notices on FaceBook.

Think status updates on Facebook--that's basically what Twitter is, but without the worries of walls and zombie attacks etc.  I have connected with a lot of people using Twitter and it's very fun.  It's easy to put news up as well--book news, site news and direct people to it (people might not be plugged into your site, but if they're plugged into your Twitter, they'll get the head's up).  And if you want to say something specifically to someone, you just put the @username before your message.  It's a quick and easy way of keeping in touch, sharing news.  I heart Twitter.

I like Twitter, too, even though I don't personally know anyone who's on there, so nobody really reads me at least yet (except Cana:-). :-D But I sort of  also see it as a possible promotional tool if I ever get published; youngsters love Twitter, and I imagine they'd love to read the Twitterings of authors they like. I think. ;-) Do any of you published folks have fans/readers following you?

My DH and I find twitter super-useful, because it's so much quicker than email.  We use it like a telegraph:  Kids are insane.  Running late.  That sort of thing......

Hey, I've got a question for you guys. when you have your page protected, is it weird to hear from people you don't know requesting to follow you? i've got this guy asking to follow me - I have no idea who he is or how he found me, but I'm not sure I want to allow him or not. He is a writer, but he doesn't seem to be into kidlit (mostly poetry, I think). The whole point of protecting my page was so that only people I "know" could see what I'm up to. I'm not interested in meeting new random people.

The problem is, what if it's someone from here and I just don't know it? Is it common to turn people down for following or do you just go, meh, what the heck? The more the merrier?

Just feeling a little lost in this situation.

My Twitter is not protected, but I think I'm going to lock it up soon...only because I'm about to query, and I'd be mortified if an agent googled me and my latest update involved pajama pants and cats...or worse. LOL. Honestly though, if you don't want someone "following you" (is that creepy to anyone else?), just block them. I've blocked a bunch of people that didn't seem at all interested in writing. OTOH, I've NOT blocked some writers who weren't into kidlit. I just don't "follow" them back. I'm not really interested in their updates, but if they want to be bored to DEATH reading about my pajamas and cats, I really don't care one way or another.

Aren't you glad I was SO MUCH HELP???

THROUGH TO YOU

What Emily said!

You are under no obligation to follow anyone.  Sometimes followers are spam twitters, as well.  Easy way to tell this is that they're following massive amounts of people and their tweets are selling you something.  If they're NOT spammers and they're following a lot of people (I get non-spammers following hundreds), I tend to not follow them back because I know they're going to be so innundated with tweets there is not going to be any real connecting there.  So if you feel bad about not adding, check out for those things first and it might make you feel better.

I think the key to twitter is to not look at it like say, LiveJournal.  Not following someone is not turning them down.  It's your twitter, you set the rules.

(Weirdly enough, I'd take Twitter's 'following' to LJ's 'friending' any day, heh.)

LOL, actually, that was helpful. I agree -- why would anyone who doesn't know us care about anything we have to say about dead fish and cats or what I'm making for Thanksgiving dinner? It's weird. Half the time I figure people who "know" me, don't even care, but I don't let that stop me.  :hug

Here's what's really weird. The guy ended up being able to follow me even though I didn't approve him. Is there something I did that allowed that without realizing?

Anyway, that creeped me out just enough that I disallowed him. I would recommend for any blueboarders who want to join in, to either post here to let us all know you're coming, or post a comment to the person you're trying to follow, just so we know who you are. Otherwise, you get the boot from me.

I feel so harsh. But the internet is big and scary.  :guns

Ah, I'm quickly adding that I've now seen courtney's post. Thank you too. I feel no more guilt. I have a feeling the guy was trying to sell his poetry. Moving on. I've got  :yum to deal with.
#45 - October 12, 2008, 11:58 AM

Happy Thanksgiving.  :D

If your updates are protected and he's following you, he can't see anything until you've approved him.  And since you aren't following him back, he can't.

Okay, thanks Courtney. He was under my list of followers, so I thought that meant he could see me. I guess it's still going to take me a while to get used to all of it.

Okay, I'm in, too--http://twitter.com/katysd mostly because my fav part of FaceBook is the status updates. And I'm following all of you guys!

Now what I'd like to know is how to customize the background with book covers. Anyone care to share?

Twitter makes me feel like a twit. But I am twittering. Whenever I get a follower, I think cool! More people to see how randomly strange I am. But because my twitterings don't tend to be private stuff, I don't care who follows me and I think of it as good promotion. Hopefully. But now I have lots of other twitters to follow! Cool!

Whew! I've just signed up and I am now following everyone listed on this thread. I hope you all don't mind, but I figured I'd learn a thing or two from you all. I just landed an agent for my middle grade novel, and I can use all the help I can get.

This is too much right now. Maybe after Christmas or New Years or Easter. My head is spinning from facebook, LJ, VK, Linkedin, AN, Debs2009, MySpace,Blogspot, FlapJacket, Shelfari  :bricks

When I do get around to Twittering I'll connect with all the VK people. They're a nice bunch.
