SCBWI's Blueboard - A Message & Chat Board

Discussion started on

My DH and I find twitter super-useful, because it's so much quicker than email.  We use it like a telegraph:  Kids are insane.  Running late.  That sort of thing......

I've jumped in!

Thanks Courtney for all the great links!

Hey, I've got a question for you guys. when you have your page protected, is it weird to hear from people you don't know requesting to follow you? i've got this guy asking to follow me - I have no idea who he is or how he found me, but I'm not sure I want to allow him or not. He is a writer, but he doesn't seem to be into kidlit (mostly poetry, I think). The whole point of protecting my page was so that only people I "know" could see what I'm up to. I'm not interested in meeting new random people.

The problem is, what if it's someone from here and I just don't know it? Is it common to turn people down for following or do you just go, meh, what the heck? The more the merrier?

Just feeling a little lost in this situation.

My Twitter is not protected, but I think I'm going to lock it up soon...only because I'm about to query, and I'd be mortified if an agent googled me and my latest update involved pajama pants and cats...or worse. LOL. Honestly though, if you don't want someone "following you" (is that creepy to anyone else?), just block them. I've blocked a bunch of people that didn't seem at all interested in writing. OTOH, I've NOT blocked some writers who weren't into kidlit. I just don't "follow" them back. I'm not really interested in their updates, but if they want to be bored to DEATH reading about my pajamas and cats, I really don't care one way or another.

Aren't you glad I was SO MUCH HELP???

LOL, actually, that was helpful. I agree -- why would anyone who doesn't know us care about anything we have to say about dead fish and cats or what I'm making for Thanksgiving dinner? It's weird. Half the time I figure people who "know" me, don't even care, but I don't let that stop me.  :hug

Here's what's really weird. The guy ended up being able to follow me even though I didn't approve him. Is there something I did that allowed that without realizing?

Anyway, that creeped me out just enough that I disallowed him. I would recommend for any blueboarders who want to join in, to either post here to let us all know you're coming, or post a comment to the person you're trying to follow, just so we know who you are. Otherwise, you get the boot from me.

I feel so harsh. But the internet is big and scary.  :guns

Ah, I'm quickly adding that I've now seen courtney's post. Thank you too. I feel no more guilt. I have a feeling the guy was trying to sell his poetry. Moving on. I've got  :yum to deal with.

Okay, thanks Courtney. He was under my list of followers, so I thought that meant he could see me. I guess it's still going to take me a while to get used to all of it.

Okay, I'm in, too-- mostly because my fav part of FaceBook is the status updates. And I'm following all of you guys!

Now what I'd like to know is how to customize the background with book covers. Anyone care to share?

LOUD LULA, Two Lions 2015

Twitter makes me feel like a twit. But I am twittering. Whenever I get a follower, I think cool! More people to see how randomly strange I am. But because my twitterings don't tend to be private stuff, I don't care who follows me and I think of it as good promotion. Hopefully. But now I have lots of other twitters to follow! Cool!

Whew! I've just signed up and I am now following everyone listed on this thread. I hope you all don't mind, but I figured I'd learn a thing or two from you all. I just landed an agent for my middle grade novel, and I can use all the help I can get.

C. Lee

This is too much right now. Maybe after Christmas or New Years or Easter. My head is spinning from facebook, LJ, VK, Linkedin, AN, Debs2009, MySpace,Blogspot, FlapJacket, Shelfari  :bricks

When I do get around to Twittering I'll connect with all the VK people. They're a nice bunch.

#49 - November 28, 2008, 09:21 AM

I signed up

But I haven't taken the time to figure out how to add followers. Anyway, feel free to add me to your list and eventually I'll figure it out!

I just added everyone from here who didn't have their twitter protected. Any of you "protected" people can feel free to add me if you want :)

A friend asked me to join a few weeks ago and I hopped on. (Though, I haven't done the Facebook or MySpace thing yet... avoided, so far.)

Then, one day on vacation, DH mentioned it and I said, "What?" I guess he has an account now, too. I'll have to mind my Ps and Qs. TeeHee!

I tried to add all the VK Twitterers, but if I missed you, here's mine:

Courtney: Thanks so much for the links!

Okay, I'm experimenting with following a couple of VKers on Twitter, in hopes that it will be a motivator instead of an excuse to procrastinate. But don't take it personally if I back out!

I signed up in July but couldn't figure out how to use it. I'm trying to get the hang of all this social networking so I took some time today and learned the ropes. I went through and followed everyone in this thread. I'm looking forward to connecting more!

Well, I started following you, in case you're wondering who that is. It's me.  :smile You can try the friend search in the settings (I think they call it the settings). Good luck and beware, it's quite addictive. The best way to figure it out, is to just start playing around with it.
