I followed you, Bethany.  I'm that "@susanjsteward" person.  (The J is for Jaina)  I'll see if I can follow everyone from this thread today.  Doubtless they'll all be thinking Who the heck is that?

Edit:  Going to try to put in the link here:  http://twitter.com/susanjsteward

Thanks! I'll follow everyone back (or go through the thread for people) when I get home- which will not be until tomorrow since I am chaperoning a lock-in for the science fiction club tonight. I'm tired just thinking about it.

But yay, maybe I can figure out how to use twitter effectively. :)

Whew! I have just gone through all 12 pages of this thread and added everyone Twitter would allow. For some reason, there were about 10 whose follow button would not respond. I haven't tweeted much, but I hope to get up to speed soon.

Hi all! Just to make life (& twitter) more confusing (though my intent is to make it less confusing)  :hahaha
I've changed my profile name. My tinkerbell pic is the same, so you can always find me that way. Here's my profile link:

I have a list going of Blueboarders. You can find it here:

and Helene Boudreau does as well:

You can follow a list or start one of your own!

Wow.  I've just followed everyone in this thread that still had a valid account (some of them weren't) that wasn't protected (some of them were).  Hope I didn't miss anyone.  I now have about 150 more people I'm following than I did this morning, but since I'm fairly new to Twitter, that seems manageable.  If not, I may try Tweetdeck or Hootsuite or whatnot.
#337 - April 29, 2010, 01:09 PM

Tweetdeck rocks!  It's especially nice if you're following #askagent, #yalitchat, and #writechat and stuff.  Seriously has made 'Twitter-life' that much easier, yo.

I've added a bunch of you.  Tweet like the wind!

Thanks!  And yeah, while I teach high school, and even though I don't anticipate posting anything inappropriate, I feel like I need to protect the tweets.

Elephants,

Facebook is much easier than twitter to start, I think. Just go and set up an account and when they ask for your info, put in your high school and old jobs and it can find your old friends for you! I'm talking to people I haven't seen in over 20 years. Twitter is good to see what people are doing, even if you don't have much to say you can always push the retweet button on what others have said and it puts it on your page. Check out the lists people have made on this thread and that can help you find people to follow. I had to make a bunch of lists so I could keep everyone organized. I have agents, editors, publishers, librarians, bloggers, YA book reviewers, book sellers, authors, book people... That way those people I want to hear from the most I follow and can check lists to see what others are doing. Often people on my lists are in conversations so I can keep up easier and comment back. If you're one of those people that likes to listen in on conversations and add something, twitter is the place for you. You won't be accused of eavesdropping or interrupting!

:hahaha  :hijacked (Maybe we should have a thread, I know it took me forever to figure all this out!)

Also:
For FB, after you enter your info, they will assist you in setting everything up, but you can always go to the help center under your account tab. Twitter also has a help button that explains it all.

Here I am again:

Question: do you follow everyone back who follows you, even though they don't seem to have anything in common with you (aren't kidlit tweeps or tweeps who share your hobbies/interests)? I struggle with this a bit because I want to keep my follow list relevant (bc I read it daily). But I don't want to hurt people, and I'm a nobody, so perhaps I should only be grateful for every follower. Then again, I have followed a few non-relevant people in the past who filled my feed with stuff I wasn't interested in. I even posted a Twitter policy on my website, but haven't "dared" to tweet it yet as I don't want to look like a snob.

What's your take on this?  :chickendance

Except for the few few celebs I follow, I only follow writers, even if they don't write my genre. I take a peek at their homepage before I follow.  :smile

I try to follow back if I can determine they are a real person, which is not always easy to determine.

I follow most people back who follow me. I've found that even though I may think we don't have anything in common, sooner or later we do. Still, most of the people that follow me are writers(lots of different genres.) But if it looks like someone just retweets a bunch of stuff, is hard selling their writing (or whatever they're trying to sell), or is tweeting as their book or character I don't follow them back. I do check everyones profiles and webpages if they're listed. It's a little time consuming, but if they've found me and chosen to follow me I feel like I should put in a bit of effort to know them.

I just took the plunge a week or two ago (came thisshort of saying I never would), and I'm liking more than I thought. Should anyone need another person to follow another person I'm at http://www.twitter.com/jodyfeldman. And I apologize in advance for any faux pas I may make. I"m still learning.

I'm still enjoying Twitter, but I have found myself unfollowing people lately, mostly people who have grossed me out with talk of body fluids and such (I'm not overly fond of potty talk, gross humor, etc.).  I'm sure they'll be offended if they discover I've unfollowed, but I just don't like my stomach to turn when I read tweets.  I'm going to try to stop feeling guilty about not following absolutely everybody who follows me.  I suspect we all have our lists of Twitter annoyances and personal pet peeves. . . or am I the only one?

Okay--I'm at the bottom of the Twitter learning curve and not completely sure I want to climb it but REALLY? What does a "unreal" Twitter person look like and why are they there? Is it spam-like? I thought there were Twitter rules about this type of thing.

I follow most people back who follow me. I've found that even though I may think we don't have anything in common, sooner or later we do. Thanks for the shortcourse in Twitter tips. I love this thread!

Bridgette, I am a Twitter neophyte too, but I have learned there are spammers and marketers on Twitter... Some of them follow you in the hopes you will follow back.  You can go to their Twitter page to see that all their posts are ads or links to ads or other promotional material, etc.  I try not to follow these folks.   I understand that there are programs the spammers use where if you tweet using certain buzz words they will automatically follow you, but I don't know how it works exactly.

What a great resource! Thank you. Now, for a very basic question: if I click to "follow the list" will that automatically sign me up for all those folks on your list? Or do I need to individually add each person?

Thank you! I had no idea. I'm feeling a teeny bit excited about twittering. I still can't figure out what to tweet about but at least I can be a knowledgeable lurker!  :yup

If you follow the list, it will show up as a link in your sidebar. Then, whenever you click on the list's link you'll see updates from people on that list. If you want any of those people to automatically show up on your stream, you'll need to follow them individually.
