I signed up for twitter yesterday. I wanted to get some form of my name reserved before they were all taken. And I caught on enough from reading the posts here that I was able to add the blueboard list (thanks Helene!) and that shows up on my sidebar. I'm not tweeting yet though. I'm blogging on a semi-regular basis, and at least with that I enjoy the journaling type of feel to it, even if no one reads it. But with the tweets....I dunno...I just don't have anything exciting enough happening (yet! thinking positive) or have enough close contacts to feel like anyone would be interested.

It's okay to just follow others and not tweet for a while, right?

Is there someplace I can learn how to follow the "twitter-speak"? I'm not even sure who's tweeting to whom when I try to follow....
And isn't there kidlit stuff going on? How does that work? 140 characters is not much to have a real chat it seems?

Jayca, to me, the twitter learning curve has been the hardest. It seems the twitter nuance has a lot of backstory. LOL.

I rely on Debbie Ohi's Twitter Guide for Writers (http://www.inkygirl.com/a-writers-guide-to-twitter/), Greg Pincus' A Happy Accident (http://www.thehappyaccident.net/) and Kristen Lamb's blog (http://warriorwriters.wordpress.com/) for good basic information and links.

Thank you, Bridgette! I'll check out those links today. I agree about the learning curve. Maybe there's a Twitter for Dummies book, LOL. Definitely not as new-user-friendly as blogging or social sites.

Looking forward to following you guys and learning as I go!!! I feel  *almost* brave enough to make my first tweet, LOL.

Just now trying to learn my way around Twitter...

I've been trying to add everyone to my blueboarder twitter list here: http://twitter.com/HeleneBoudreau/blueboarders/members

If you don't see yourself on the list, please @ me here: http://twitter.com/HeleneBoudreau

I think I did this, but I'm not sure.  Ack.  Should I go in and follow blueboarders individually or will following the list suffice?

I'm here: http://twitter.com/#!/jennygoebel

I think.

You can follow the list but I think it's better to follow people individually too. That way their tweets become part of your stream and automatically come up each time you log on. Use the list to find people. Plus, if you follow people using the list only they won't know you're following and won't follow you back.

Posted on the blogs thread, but putting it here too since it's about Twitter. I did a Twitter demonstration at our SCBWI meeting last night, but since there's too much to cover in a short time, I wanted to post my notes with pictures online for people to review, so I made that into a blog post for anyone who needs a Twitter tutorial. It's a long post because it starts out really basic and works up from there, but you can scroll to the section you need if you're past the basic stuff.

I guess this is the best place to include this link?

FYI, re: the twitter list I created. I haven't been able to add people to the list since they changed from old to new twitter. I've tried everything but I can't update the list so I guess it is what it is for now until I can figure it out.  :sigh

Helene,

Have you tried switching back to the old version? I accidentally went to the new and hated it, but managed to find how to go back. When you get it to work, compare your list to mine:

Helene, when mine switched, I was able to get the old twitter back from one of the menus at the top. I scrolled over each thing until I saw something about switching back to old twitter (found it by accident). Hope that helps!

Pam, thanks for adding my @Ani_Lou twitter feed to your list!

Another Twitter newbie here. Does anyone know if Helene got her list fixed? I'd like to be added so I can tweet with you all.  I'm at Jeanne_Ryan.

Thanks for the link to your tutoral, LynneK. I'll check it out!

Helene, there is a limit of the number of people you can have on a list--500. When I couldn't put any more people on my 'writers' list, I just started a "writers2" list.

I finally signed up a couple of days ago.  :) I feel a bit silly making random tweets about things, but I suppose I'll get used to it soon enough. There's a lot to learn about how it all works!

Edit (October 2011): I've deactivated my Twitter for the foreseeable future, so I'm deleting my account name from this post.

So I've been on Twitter for about a month or so now - question, who are these people who follow you, but all they tweet is random links to entertainment stuff or news stuff.  What's that all about?  I haven't followed them back because they don't seem like real people.  Just wondering?

@HeyMsJRo is my handle.

I'm not sure if they're real either, J.Ro.  I'm not sure why they do it. I can't quite figure out the spam world of twitter.

It's so great to have this thread to find people to follow.
I'm on twitter too. And it would be great to tweet with blueboarders.

I can't figure out the spam world or twitter either!

I've been having fun with the chats...when I get a chance to tune into them.  #yalitchat and #kidlitchat.  If you're new to twitter, you should check them out.
#386 - March 27, 2011, 06:28 PM

They're probably spammers, J.Ro.  They follow everyone they find, and tweet nothing but links.  I don't follow them back, either.  Another weirder kind of follower are the ones who tweet quotes.  Nothing but famous quotes.  I have to think they must be a robot but I haven't figured out what the "scam" behind that kind of spambot is yet.

I just followed you--I am the one with the felt earth as my avatar!)

I have two accounts, one focused more on my writing and "personal" thoughts (http://twitter.com/#!/SaulTanpepper) and one that focuses on ebooks, indie/self-pubbing and digital (I troll the twitterverse and blogverse for writerly articles and retweet these links, usually with a quick opinion of my own). That one's at http://twitter.com/#!/WritersReTweets. As far as spam goes, there are ways to prevent people/spambots from following (requiring that a real person reply back after a request to follow). I know I've requested to follow a couple and have to do this, but I can't remember off the top of my head what "apps" you need to add this functionality. I'll do a check and post here if I find out.

I'll be adding BBrs to my follow list from here, so hopefully you guys won't think I'm spam!  :bricks
